I agree with a heating pad. Or ice? If heat helps you can send your husband out for Thermacare wraps (made by Robax), they have a size for back and hips so you can instead put it on your abdomen. The heat lasts 10-12 hours.
Can you ask your doctor for a different pain killer? From my experience, usually morphine isn't the greatest for kidney stones. Dilaudid seriously kicks pain in the ass.
Kidney stones are a bitch. Ugh, I'm so sorry. Can they give you anything different for pain meds? My doctor gave me post surgical oxycodone which was awesome and helped a lot.
Stay home, no work. I've had kidney stones and they are a major suck. I remember taking Oxycontin and it did not even touch the pain. I laid in the fetal position for hours and hours until puking my guts up and the stone passing. I feel for you, I so do.
Go to the Dr again if it isn't getting better, but feeling it move lower sounds like a good sign. Just don't be scared to see a dr again for help!
My uncle once passed a stone drunk off of beer...I wouldn't recommend that. Cranberry juice is what my mom always had me drink. Dude, I'd go back to the ER and demand stronger stuff. But, I don't mind the ER.
I'm so sorry. I've heard that passing a kidney stone is worse than childbirth. I've never passed a kidney stone but I did have gallstones, and I remember the attacks being so painful that nothing I did helped. I took pain killers and was still miserable. I just remember pacing around because nothing I did made myself comfortable. Did the doctor say how long it could take to pass and if there is anything to do to speed it up? I'm sorry you are going through this
mekiakoo well. I've never actually passed one to my knowledge. I've had lithotripsy on a 7mm stone and 2 5mm stones because they were too big to pass. How big did they say it was? Did they tell you to follow up with a urologist? I'd do that. He'll perscribe you pain meds and talk to you about your options. If it's bigger than 5mm, it's likely too big to pass and they'll want to try to either blast it w/lithotripsy or put in a stent (DO NOT WANT EVER)
Last year I passed a kidney stone the size of a small marble at work. I had spent the past couple days before lying on my office's floor because it was the only way I could work.
I can't believe they sent you home without something stronger! If the pain is so bad you can't sleep, I'd go back to the ER. And the fact that the pain is lower is a good sign!
Definitely stay at home. You never know how the pain can change as the stone moves. Are you taking the hydrodone (hydrocodone = Vicodin)? If it is a painkiller, start, now! Stones can pass super quickly, like the same day you get it, or they can take a long time. I had one that I didn't pass after over a month, so they were going to use lithotripsy, but instead they ended up just removing it (pulling it out) and then putting in a stint to keep my ureter open (HELL). Do you like lemonade? Drink that if you can, it can help dissolve some stones (depends on type). Your ER sounds like a complete mess, so I would try to get a call in to your primary and go in if you need to. Tell them how much pain you are still in and that you NEED something stronger, you shouldn't have to sit there in pain.
