Any suggestions? I think I'll definitely use craft paper to do a mock up before I start, but I'm at a loss for figuring out how many pictures of each size, how far apart, etc.
I'm also thinking I will go with all black frames to keep it simple, but has anyone done a different color, or a combination? I have brown furniture, so I'm wondering if black frames would look weird.
I am currently working on a photo wall going down my steps. I have brown furniture and chose black frames. I think it looks fine. Defiantly use craft paper for a mock up.
The only advise I have based on the original photo wall that I started is to have all of the frames that you want to put on the wall. I had a mental block when I tried to add to the wall after the first set of frames were up.
I am liking my larger gallery frames and am going to add back some of the original frames to make it more of a collage wall than what that post shows.

I dont' have any pics available - but I started with a few key photos that I loved and hung them up and then I'm kind of letting the wall grow organically - a new picture and frame every month or so. I have sizes from 4x6 not matted to 8x10 matted to an 11x14. all black frames but not the same frame and white mats or no mats
We did a HUGE wall, with mixed frames (white, black, silver). We didn't do craft paper, I actually made a plan on my computer and then we used that as a guide. DH is handy, that helped A LOT. It took 4 hours to put up from nothing to all up (no pics in yet, lol, I am lazy/busy).
I just did a wall of all brown frames (different styles and sizes, but all dark brown). I think I started with around 14-15, because it's a large wall and I didn't want to have just a few up there. I will probably add more over time, but this was a good start and doesn't look bare.
I put them all out on the floor to decide on the arrangement. I picked one to be in the center bottom and measured that out and hung it on the wall. Then with the others, I used command strips to hang them and eyeballed everything, working from the center out. It actually came out fine and didn't take near as much time as I think the craft paper and lining up nail holes would have.
I'm doing one going down my stairs - I bought a crap ton of the same style frame in a few sizes, and I'm filling them with pictures over time. They are on the wall going down the stairs so they are staggered, but I'm trying my best to keep roughly the same distance between the frames, and keep roughly consistent lines.
If you are doing a wall in a room or a hall, check out this post I found on pinterest. great info about correct placement and identifying a room's natural sight lines.

If you want pictures I can post some.
I'd love to see pictures!
Thanks everyone. Lots of good information. I hadn't thought about having the photos framed first, but that probably makes the most sense, rather than deciding sizes and placement and making the pictures fit.
K, here are some pics...please excuse the covered couch and unfinished table (with price tags from GoodWill still in tact!. Oh, and some of the pics have pictures in sideways...
everyone's recommendations are good so far, so functionally, i don't really have much to add.
i will share that waaaaay back in the day i did a photo wall in the hallway of my townhome in NC and we used all sorts of different picture fames (colors, designs, ornate, simple, etc.). i was able to make it work, but it definitely had a more chaotic effect to it, not stream lined and sophisticated. so, it depends on what you want. i would only do this again in a craft room or kids play room in the future.
the photo wall we have in this house is all black frames (some matted, some not) with pictures of our our family (mostly the son--will switch out with pix of the baby soon, too). the black frames work fine with our mostly espresso furniture in the room.
I didn't really have a plan when I started on it. I've just gradually added/subtracted things from it since I started it 3.5 years ago. I think it's finally to a point that I'm happy with it and only plan to change out the photos on occasion now.
ETA: Sorry for the crappy quality of the pic! I just snapped a quick on for this post.
I do recommend plotting it out ahead of time, as you're thinking of doing. We tried to eyeball a photo wall originally, and that just didn't work as well as planning it out.
Here is ours:
It's kind of hard for us to get a good picture since it's in the stairwell, but there you have it.

That website is really helpful Susieq. I love how some of you mixed in things other than pictures as well. I'll have to think about that too. Good inspiration!
