I've never painted a big piece of furniture before. Any tips/suggestions? I'm trying to read up on how to do it. DH finally gave me the okay to paint our wood daybed. I'm so excited. It will be in my craft room that will have all white furniture.
I'm assuming it's a finished wood currently? If so, I would scuff it up with some sand paper, prime with SW all surface primer and then paint with BM Advance.

Yes it's finished. It has a shine to it so I know I will need to sand and prime.
I'm about to paint my first big piece, too! I keep seeing all these awesome pictures of success stories, and I'm ready. I have a beat up $40 CL MCM dresser that I'm going to transform into a media stand with drop down fronts on the drawers to hide electronics. So excited!
What kind of paint did you get? I was considering the ace hardware door and trim its self leveling and has goods reviews. It's hard for me to get to the BM or SW stores because of their hours.
do not use CIL melamine paint. it's self leveling and supposed to be awesome for painting cabinets and furniture. it's not. our kitchen cabinets are chipping just a year later. it might be better on a bed that rarely has a person in it, but it's horrible for high use areas.

my next project will involve BM.
Did you put a wax or poly on top of it?
no. they claimed it wasn't necessary. i believed them. shouldn't have :-)
i don't care enough to repaint and poly them now though. we live in a rental. when we move out in a few years our landlord is going to reno our suite to be a useful space in his house so it won't have a kitchen anymore. i'm not paying for poly out of my pocket and i'm not willing to ask landlord either. i have bigger plans for his money... like a second bedroom so i can have a baby. but painting the cabs once was a good experience to learn for future projects.

we're using the ACE Hardware door and trim paint for our kitchen cabinets and so far so good. its been a few months and it still looks great. it does take a little getting used to working with it. I've found that just rolling it on leaves all kinds of little bubbles. I've been rolling it on, then smoothing it out with a brush. there are minor brush marks, but you won't get rid of them completely unless you spray.
overall, I recommend the ACE paint. and I used XIM UMA bonding primer, and it works great. it even stuck to the laminate on the sides of our cabinet boxes.
