We are in the process of remodeling the upstairs of our 1950's cape cod house. We are ripping out all of the drywall, replacing all of the lighting/wiring, and starting from scratch. The previous lights were those huge fluorescent ceiling lights, that look like giant rectangles. Super ugly, and the wiring was done so poorly, we were shocked the house hadn't caught fire yet. We are installing recessed lighting in the upstairs hallway and laundry area, but we need something to light up the staircase.
We just put a skylight in above the stairs, so light during the day won't be a problem. I had thought about just waiting on this, but we have an older dog, and the one time she tried to go down the stairs in the dark she slipped and fell down the stairs. She was fine, but that's a vet visit I really don't want to make again!!
I was thinking some sort of wall sconce, right at the bottom of the stairs, but I don't really like anything I have seen at home depot or lowes. I live down the street from Shades of Light, so I popped in there the other day, but they were SUPER expensive! We want something kind of modern, kind of funky, not over 100 bucks...but I'm just not sure where to look. Any recs for websites / stores where you have seen awesome wall lights? or would you do something totally different? I'm open to any suggestions!
Here's two pics of the wall where the sconce would most likely go - The blue wall.
Just one sconce? They don't put out much light. I would think you'd want a second sconce near the top of the stairs on the torn up wall in your second picture too. Of any place to be well lit in your house the stairs is one of them. If you ever have elderly family/friends over, people who aren't familiar with your stairs, or in the event of an emergency you want them to be well lit. It's actually against code to not have a light in the stairs if you have more than 6 steps. You also need a 3-way switch at the top and bottom to control the light.
I'd try looking online. You'll find a lot better prices than at Shades of Light but they do have nice stuff.
As far as finishes.. something in either brushed nickel, or more of an oil rubbed bronze. I guess I would describe our style as modern/eclectic. Dh is more modern, where as I tend to like stuff that's a little more quirky/funky/out there... I'm sure that helps you narrow it down!! You know, as far as sconces, I can't think of any that really stuck out to me. There was one I kind of liked, i thought I took a picture of it, but I guess not. I will check to see if it's on their website.
