So excited!! She's almost 8 weeks old. I haven't had a puppy in forever. I know it's going to be crazy for a while but hopefully it won't be too too bad. I'm hoping she'll take some cues from my laid back chill lab. Although I think he's going to be jealous. We just went to PetSmart to get her a collar and leash and some toys and soon as he got out the car he stuck his nose in the bag and pulled out one of the plush toys we got her and ran off with it!
Should I take her to the vet right away for a checkup? She's had some shots and been wormed but I'm wondering if we should take her right in after we get her or wait until it's time to go in for the next shots?
We always go in right away--things like worms can be treated then and anything that might be spred to other pets in the family can be checked for--my vet actgually does "new pet in the home' visits free.

When was the last round of shots? If you can find the dates, call your vet and ask when the pup needs the next round (there are usually 3-4 and I am guessing at 8 weeks, 1-2 rounds have been done). It is usually safe to assume the vet will want to give the shots 2 weeks apart, so you could probably figure that out based on the when the last round of shots was given. The biggest one is Rabies which is usually (always?) required by law and is given around 12 weeks if they weigh enough.
To answer your question, I wouldnt go to the vet until you have to get the next round of shots. You'll probably also need to get another round of de-wormer at that time.
Regarding the vet, what does the adoption/purchase contract say? Sometimes you are required to have the vet of your choice examine the dog/puppy within a certain amount of time, so I would make sure to do it within that time period. I also just like to have them meet my vet and make absolutely sure they are 100% healthy.
Take her to the vet. My girl came with all her shots and was wormed, but she had Giardia and ended up giving it to all the dogs because we didn't know and she spread it to them. Have fun with your crazy lab!

She is adorable! My chocolate lab has the little white spot right under her bottom lip too. You can only see it when she has her head a certain way. Check the contract. Ours said to take her within 72 hours. If we took after that and anything was wrong then the rescue was not liable for anything.
Yes. I think she likes him a bit more than he likes her right now lol. She hasn't been bothering him too much, just a little here and there, but he's certainly not happy there is someone else getting food in the house.

Gah!! Round puppy belly!! She's so adorable!!! Congrats!
We had an appt for Zoey at the vet within the week we brought her home, even though I knew it was too soon for her next round of shots. She got some DEwormer though (you're all driving me nuts saying your dogs got "wormed," lol), was weighed, checked over, and her heart and lungs and belly listened to. They detected a suuuuuper minor heart murmur, so I was glad to know we had something to "watch" when we came back for the next few puppy visits. By the time she was 4-5 months, the murmur was totally gone.
