So my youngest is 2, she'll be out of a crib soon, and we are done with kids. But always a believer in it's-better-late-than-never, I am just finishing up my first nursery. Both my kids were born when we were tight on space and had to have the baby's stuff in our bedroom, so I never got to do a true nursery. I kind of did little nursery nooks, but it was kind of lame TBH. When we moved in to this house, I was determined to make inspired spaces for the kids because I felt like this was my last chance to decorate for them - soon they are going to be big enough to want to do their own thing.
Anyway, here is Kate's room. It's inspired by the dresser - which was a handmedown in bad shape (but free). I refinished the wood parts and made them a deep mahogany color instead of the honey color they once were. I'm pretty happy with her room so far, but I can't figure out what to do with the stinking mirrored closet doors. Can you guys help me figure out something to do with those? I was thinking of taking the doors off and putting up something funky like a beaded curtain (or a feathered curtain!), or maybe trimming the mirrored panels with some wood to make them appear more furniture-like. But I'm not really feeling solid on anything. I'm open to taking the doors off, replacing with something else or doing something crazy to them - as long as it doesn't cost a fortune. what do you suggest?
Here are some pictures of the room so you can get a feel for what it looks like. The picture of the wall with the mirrored doors is at the end.
some of her mama-made toys living on the school desk from my Amish country roots
And here is where Tink lives ( i know the floor needs to be swept and he door trim needs to be redone. the door frame doesnt reach the floor because we tore out this nasty blue shag and refinished original floors)
here are the doors that need help- what to do with these doors??
As for the doors, if it was me, I'd just go to Lowe's and buy a new one. Bifold closet doors are really quite affordable and easy to install. I also hate the look of curtians as closet doors. I've rarely seen it not look messy or unfinished or like a dorm. That's just me though. If you like the look, it's a fine option.
What a great girls room! I like the color scheme and the decals. The closet doors are hard. It would be great to frame them out a little (use construction adhesive to glue thin strips of lumber painted white) but I don't know if they would still slide OK. A new set of doors would cost a bit...we just found that out when we tried to replace our bi-fold doors. Stain grade cherry closet doors are expensive! You could try looking at a salvage yard/ReStore for closet doors that might fit. A curtain would be nice but a little less practical when it comes to using the closet (hard to see everything at once, no full length mirror to use when getting ready) but maybe that doesn't matter really matter until she's older.

What an adorable room! I love how different it is.
For the closet, what about just painting the glass to make faux French doors? Then if you could do the curtains too? I have no idea how you paint glass. But maybe you could also use vinyl? Or some other thin plastic?
What about pulling those doors off, framing them out, and attaching them barn-door style. Not exactly like this, but it's the only framed mirror barn door I could find:
Tracks with all the hardware aren't too expensive these days. I know you don't have Menard's in SF, but as an example I saw a kit for $50 in one of their ads last week. Dr Google can probably find something similar.
FoxInFiji: I checked it out and believe it or not, the doors will still slide with that really thin trim stock (1/4"or so), so I could definitely frame the mirror out. I could do faux french doors with the trim pieces like bunnymendelbaum suggested, but I kind of love the Moroccan look of the mirrors that downtoearth posted.
I wonder if I could find Moroccan trellis vinyl decals to use, and finish them by framing the mirrors with white wood trim? I think that could be very cool! Or do you think I should just go faux french doors? I guess with the vinyl if it looks awful, I can peel it off and go the french door route... .
I also kind of like the idea of curtains on the sides of the closet to soften the edges, but the closet goes right up to the corner of the wall, so they'd have to be really skinny panels. I'll think about that one.
@callmefia, you're totally right about a beaded or feathered curtain being disastrous with the kids.
Ok. I contacted the seller and I think I'm going to get this custom sized for her doors. And I'll trim it out with white wood. Hopefully this makes the doors less boring!

Yay, I am glad you decided to keep the mirror doors!
Every bedroom had the, in our old house, and I was completely horrified when we first moved in. A I got used to it, thoug, I loved them. They made the rooms seem so much bigger, and having the mirror was convenient too. I think framing them and stenciling is a great idea.
Thank you so much for the suggestions and the inspiration! I got this decal on etsy sized to fit her closet doors and put them on this weekend. I really love how it came out - I think it's just right.
I had planned on trimming it out with some white painted wood trim, but I wound up not doing that. I don't think it needs it and the mirror has a very slight bevel, so I think it would look unfinished anyway.
Here it is, what do you think? (@bluesky requested an after pip...)

Love it and it's so inspirational for me! Now I want to stencil something.
