Everyone told me that I'd need a bazillion onesies. So I have a trajillion.
I have never used one. We just put her in a sleeper and, if it's cool, swaddl her. Am I an idiot? Should she have a onesie underneath her sleeper? And, if so, why?
We pretty much kept him in sleepers. You'll use onesies in larger sizes when you start getting your baby dressed for the day (and yes, some people feel compelled to do this from day 1).
My entire newborn wardrobe doesn't fill up one shopping bag.
In the first few weeks, I kept DD mainly in sleepers. You will get to a point where you want to actually dress her in "real" clothes, and onesies are awesome then. I actually used long-sleeved onesies on DD as a NB because we swaddled her and I was worried she'd get too hot in a sleeper + swaddle. So I just swaddled her in a onesie.
They are great if its warm, or super cold (as a layer beneath the footed outfits). But pretty soon you'll start having up the back poosplosions :-). That's when you want to have lots of extras on hand.
We didn't really use onesies until he was a few months old. I don't layer. I use them a lot now though. When he was a newborn, sleepers were much easier.

We did onesies under sleepers at night and onesies + pants during the day.
I like them more for when they are a few months older and dressing more in regular clothes (not wearing sleepers all the time) because when you pick them up the onesie doesn't ride up and show their belly. I put onesies under both my kid's clothes for a long time because of this.
I like pants + onesies during the day because sometimes when I nurse him, I can keep him more alert/awake by taking his pants off. He nurses better when you touch his bare skin. It's one swift motion to pull his pants off while he's in my lap vs. trying to find the end of the zipper.
Mine wears sleepers all day, with a onesie underneath. I have no idea why the onesie is needed. It didn't start out that way until my mum came and said it was necessary to keep him warm?! I figured I need to use the onesies so he's wearing them underneath his sleepers.

He wore onesies during the day because we also did outfits. Also when it was cooler out we would put them under his shirts so that his stomach wasn't always hanging out.
Now that is is getting warmer I have a feeling he will be living in them. Especially under his overalls.

I used just onesies underneath the swaddling blanket when it was warm. When she was an older baby, I liked onesies with pants that way her shirt wouldn't ride up.

I never used onesies much until my kids were in 3-6 months, at which point I'd pair them with cotton pants. Until then, they basically lived in footed sleepers.

Everyone told us too that we would need them. We definitely didn't use them the first month or so. We kept DS in sleepers for ease. Once we started dressing him on the regular I did onesies and pants/shorts.
DD was born in December so she wore sleepers with onesies underneath most days. Now that it is getting warmer, she either wears a sleeper with nothing underneath or a onesie and pants. It is still a PITA to put things over her head, so I tend to keep her in sleepers if it's not too warm.
We keep our house pretty cool in winter (68 degrees during the day), so I always had DS in a onesie under his sleepers and outfits. Plus we had a convertible car seat from day 1, so I carried him to the car wrapped in a blanket. He wasn't snuggled in a carrier seat, so he needed the extra warmth. I only had about 8-10 plain white onesies and that was more than enough for layering.
Now that it's warmer out, I don't layer him at all.
I guess I'm like CloudBee and pugz and used onesies all the time from the beginning. In our case, we didn't do footed sleepers because E had a cast on his left leg from 1-5 weeks (to correct his clubfoot), and until 17 weeks had to wear a boot & bar brace 23 hours a day, so footed things weren't an option. We did mostly onesies and pants, or jumpsuits. I'd layer a onesie under the snap-front jumpsuits, since the spaces between the snaps tend to gap open. But I did also like getting baby dressed for the day. No fussy outfits, though!
Sorry to hijack...but on a related note. Is it shameful to put my summer baby only in onesies when going out?
Depends if you're asking other moms at the park or old ladies at the grocery store.
:Y: OMG, watch out for anyone over about age 50. They all think that babies need to be bundled up all the time. My mom constantly wanted to put a blanket over E when he was napping... in the 68 degree house... in long sleeves.

My kid was born in Feb, but it was crazy unseasonably warm last year, so she lived in onesies and Babylegs. I also put her in just a onesie inside the sleep sack at night. Last year was so weird for weather. I might have been more into sleepers if it was this year where it's like spring will never come.

I had a feeling that would be the answer!
BTW, my future baby NEEDS that dragon. Any chance you got it somewhere online?
We did onesies under his Miracle Blanket, I thought a sleeper was too hot. He almost always wears a onesie and pants. I think sleeper vs onesie for newborns is a personal preference.

Oh yeah, it's by Jellycat--it's actually a dinosaur, but I figured it was similar enough to a dragon for that photo shoot. I'm having a hard time finding it available online now... I bought ours in a store last summer. Looks like Diapers.com used to sell it (www.diapers.com/p/jellycat-darling-dino-doppy-green-166665) and a couple random online stores I don't recognize have it. It's such a cool toy.
Our babies slept in a onesie under the Miracle Blanket at night (summer in Texas) and often just wore a onesie or a onesie and knit pants during the day.
