I skipped both baby monitors and apnea alarms. At no point did I wish I had one. It really depends how anxious/paranoid you are and if you'll trust the machine enough for it to solve that fear.

We used the Snuza until DS was around 8 months old. (At that point he was rolling around so much that we got a lot of false alarms). We tried both versions because our dog destroyed the first one. I didn't notice a difference between them - certainly not enough of a difference to justify the $30 price difference!
It was TOTALLY worth it to me. It gave me a lot of peace of mind. I don't think I would have slept without it. In fact, I slept on the floor in DS's room (VERY uncomfortable) until we got the Snuza. It was just a high anxiety time for me.
