The city of Santa Fe passed a law stating that same sex couples can legal get married today. Unfortunately it is not as easy as that and has to go to court, but it's a start.
Kind of related, but not directly, a close family friend died last weekend. My mom and her husband were out to dinner with him and his partner. They were eating at a restaurant at the top of the Sandia Mountians and the quickest way to get the is to take the tram.
Vince apparently had a heart attack and the paramedics were called. They tried to resuscitate (sp?) him. His partner them them that Vince had a DNR order, but not on him. Vince was 92 years old. The paramedics could not stop because John was not legally married to Vince. They worked on Vince for over an hour and a half.
This is just one example as to why same sex marriage needs to be legal.
ETA: Vince died in Albuquerque, where he lives, about 60 miles from Santa Fe.
Regarding the DNR, in my state, the paramedics can't stop reviving someone based on someone (family or doctor) saying he had a DNR. They had to continue to revive him until they had the appropriate documentation. The same would have happened regardless of the spouse's gender.
