I just closed out of my browser and was literally closing my laptop when the special guest (I think maybe she is a nutritionist?) on The Today Show (err...H&K) told Hoda that a woman should be eating 1,500 cal/day to lose weight. Whaaaaaaat!! Did anyone else see this?!
The entire "show" was based on how important it is to use low weight/high reps so you don't "bulk up" like a man and that high-intensity cardio workouts are for elite athletes. Interesting, since it is a Beach Body program but who knew Beach Body made all of these other programs too?!
'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather, to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming 'Woohoo! What a ride!' So every day is a holiday and every meal a feast."
The Today Show gets all kinds of gems. A guy earlier this week recommended an 800cal diet for women and 1000 or 1200 (can't remember?) for men. Personally, I think that's dangerous and WRONG.
And don't *even* get me started on the "bulking up" nonsense.

i have been around 1400-1500 net calories a day and have lost 15 since the start of the year. It is the right number for me. But I think it is a lot better to choose a calorie count that suits your current body, goals, and lifestyle in order to be successful. Also anything on the Today show after 8am is garbage. and that last hour is the worst
I didn't have a problem with her and the 1500 calories, but I had a problem with her saying that most people don't have to snack and the guy from the biggest loser saying to only eat 800 calories. I think a lot of crazy women will listen to him.
Maybe they meant NET calories? I eat around 1800 net per day to maintain, so 1500 net doesn't seem too outrageous for weight loss, especially if the person isn't extremely active. I have stopped being bothered by the high reps/low weight, low reps/high weight, HIIT vs endurance cardio debates. Sure, I have my opinions on what is optimal... but when someone has a lot of weight to lose, if they are sticking with their calorie targets and doing ANY exercise, it is a step in the right direction.
1500 is right where I need to be to lose a pound a week so I'm really confused by why you think that's insane.
I don't really get it either. I also don't think a lot of people take activity levels into account, or even more importantly, how much BMR can differ depending on someone's weight/height/age. I'm a smaller person. Unless I'm in the middle of marathon training and knocking out 50+ miles per week, I don't really require a ton of calories.
The weights and bulking up comment annoys me, but it doesn't annoy me any more than the people who love heavy lifting and swear that light weights/higher reps is a waste of time. It's not. At all. I don't give a crap either way, but I've seen people do both with great success and banging bodies. People should care less what other people are doing.
The things that annoy me about what was apparently said on the Today Show, is the blanket statements by this "expert." What works for one, might not work for another.
I think the comments probably could have been prefaced with a statement like, "A sedentary woman" or "A woman working out 3 times a week, 30 minutes a day."
But keep in mind that the ladies who post on H&F are awesome and aren't the norm. I don't have many friends in real life who work out as much as the ladies on this board.
