It's going to be a long, slow day in the lab, so I thought that I'd share an actual text conversation with my MIL.
Background about my MIL: she's got all the symptoms of borderline personalities disorder without an official diagnosis, and she seesaws between acting like Eeyore and Tigger. Also, she's college educated
Background for the text convo: she sweetly picked up some coffee beans for me at Costco, and I was very belated in expressing my thanks yesterday afternoon.
me (1 pm): Thanks so much for the coffee-it was such an unexpected treat and will make my mornings much happier!
MIL (6 pm): Not sure you mean to send this to me. But I am glad you have someone that is making you happy.
MIL (10 pm): Now I know what you are talking about I am a little slow today.
MIL (6 am today): Hope u have great sorry I was so slow yesterday.
Sigh. Her passive-aggressiveness knows no bounds, but at least I've learned to laugh it off and cringe at her grammar.

That whole first text could have also been phrased: "I know you're not thanking me because you hate me and I could never make you happy. So I'm glad that there's someone out there who can make you happy, because again that person could never be me." She only works in extreme emotions, but at least I'm at a point now where I expect that an over-the-top response and don't take it personally.
Also, she sadly doesn't make more sense in person, so I can't claim that she's using super abbreviated text-speak.
You are reading much too much into her statements. Just how late were you in your thanking her for the coffee? I can easily see how she would f, orget after a few days if she was busy, distracted etc.

Five years ago, I wouldn't have given her comment a second thought. There's enough history, though (and DH warned me that she was crazy before we got together), that the extreme interpretation is more likely correct. DH's take on her texts was less generous than mine.
To all those with extreme-reacting people in your lives, I hope you at least got a chuckle!
