I had 2 interviews for a new job, and they informed me that they are contacting references now. Thoughts on the likelihood that I'll be offered the job?
Yes. That and a background check are typically the last steps in the hiring process. Also, make sure your references know they will be calling. We always ask if they have been informed when we are doing references.
Another yes. Obviously every company is different, but if I check references, it's the last step before an offer goes out. I can't imagine them taking the time to do so unless you were in the final stage.
That's what I thought. I've contacted my references to give them a heads up. And I told my current and former team leads about it, since they will likely be contacted. Now that they know, I just hope this comes through.
Funny story, there was only one time I didn't extend an offer after calling someone's references.
I called the woman, and after speaking to her, found out she was the candidate's mom. And she wasn't exactly full of kind words for her son.
LOL!
In my case, the idiot who interviewed me didn't realize I was out of work. It was CLEAR from my resume I was not working. But I guess after talking to my former boss (who gave me a great reference for my current job, so I know it wasn't his reference) it clicked in her head that I was unemployed and she thought I was lying to her. arg. sorry, you're an idiot for not reading my resume correctly. I never said anything to indicate I was working.

Sounds like they want you. Yay!! How did your current team lead react about you possibly leaving, or did they already know?
It's certainly a good sign. I will say that for my current job, my awesome reference pried for me just a bit and found out I was one of 4 applicants for whom they were calling references. But I think that is very unusual. Don't let them call your current employer until they are prepared to extend an offer. I was VERY clear about that and it wasn't an issue.
Orangeblossom- she was caught off guard when I told her. She is struggling to keep her head above water right now b/c she can't delegate. She said that the team is fucked if I leave. Direct quote.
I am giving a big presentation at the end of the month to our nat'l advisory committee. That would be a great way to end my time in my current office.

Giving a big presentation would be the perfect way to end your time. Sounds like you are really valued based on your team leads response. They'll manage. Somehow they always do.
