so i am used to being sore after a long run, but after Sunday's 1/2 my big toes and the middle toe on each foot are crazy hurting today. I am not sure if this is just "hey you ran 13 miles yesterday idiot" or if i might have injured myself somehow. They do not hurt when I am sitting but the second I put any sort of weight on it, holy hell. it is really tender under the nail part not on the bottom. I am guessing this is normal but is it? I've lost my big toe nails before but it did not hurt like this last time.
i wear Brook's Adrenaline shoes and always have. It might be time for a new pair anyway but not sure if it is the shoe or just the wear and tear from the race that will fade away.
My toes, underneath the nail, are always really sensitive after a long run. They don't hurt if I put weight on them but if I touch or bump the nail I cringe. I often lose the same toenails. I figure it is an impact thing and haven't worried about it.

this exactly, except when i stand up to walk the middle toes especially hurt. sigh.
i think it is time to try new shoes. I go to a running store for them but it has been awhile since i got a new pair. (i am way overdue).

I recently had this happen to my right foot after my Metric Marathon. It looked almost like a blister under the nail for a little while. The pain/tenderness went away after a couple days and now my toenail is just darker (not black, though). I'm wait for it to fall off or something, but it hasn't yet.

I wonder if you need to go up half a size in your shoe. I was originally fitted in a 9.5, and while it felt perfectly fine, especially on shorter runs, I had a lot of problems with blisters on my toes during long runs. So I went up half a size, to 10s, and no more problems.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I wear an 8.5 in normal shoes and always wore a 9 in running shoes, and they were find while I was running up to halfs. I never had any toe/nail problems until I started running full marathons. The extra swelling in my feet from the really long distances made my toenails hurt and they eventually got really thick and gross. I went up another half size (so a full size from my normal shoes) and the problem completely disappeared. I had to change the way I lace my shoes at the top so they don't slip in the heel, but once I got used to the bigger size it has been soooo much better!
I used to have very tender toes after long runs too. Come to find out my shoe was a half size too small. Once I went up my toes feel fine and are healing up (went black and bloody)
Good idea on the sizing. I am already up half a size but that's obviously not working anymore. I do not anticipate anything longer than a 14 mile run at this point but a bigger size might be the answer. They are a little better today, thank goodness.

Yes and yes to jordylee and Wines Not Whines, especially if, like me, your middle toe is longer than your big toe. Also, Brooks seem to run smaller than other running shoes. I am a 9 in regular shoes and ran in 9.5s and 10s for Asics. I ran in 10s for Brooks Adrenalines and I had constant black toenails. After running 8+ miles, my middle toes always felt like I had dropped a dumbbell on them. I like the shoes otherwise, though, and when I switched to a pair of size 10.5s, the sore toes went away.
I had this happen to me during my fall marathon - both big toes & 2nd toes. I wear a 5.5 or 6 in dress shoes, but wore 6.5 in running shoes. It was blazingly hot for the marathon & i'm sure my feet were swelling as well. I got re-fitted for Brooks and went up another half size in that shoe.
It was really red & blistered underneath. I lost one toenail & the big toenails are still discolored (almost 6 months later - yikes). I'm interested to see if going up another half-size helps.
I'll agree that some of Brooks models seem to run a little small. Your feet can also swell with longer distances and/or hotter weather. I'd definitely say trying on a half size up next time is a good idea. In the meantime, I've had plenty of nasty bruised toenails over the years and mine always seem to stop hurting after a few days. Hope yours feel better soon!
The good news is my toes are in much better shape and my thighs are no longer screaming at me. I am taking a break from running for a bit to change things up but will get new running shoes when i hit the pavement again.
