Does this happen to anyone else? When I run or other strenuous exercise where I get a little dehydrated, I get terrible cramps especially on the right side. I assume this is related to the Mirena, but I don't know if this is common.
I have had Mirena for 8 years now, 5 years for the first one and 3 years for the second one (currently 31 years old). I always had really terrible, long irregular period, and cramping, and then when i started taking the pill I had terrible weight gain, energy loss, etc etc. Mirena has been generally wonderful. I have absolutely loved it, and recommend it to everyone I know.
The first Mirena completely stopped my bleeding. but unfortunately it ran out before I put the second one in (2.5 months gap) and in that time my periods came back quite full on. The second Mirena has not gotten rid of my period completely these last 3 years. But still much better than it was. Every month I have cramping only for a couple of days and spotting on 1-2 days most months (sometimes just a few spots), and occasionally some spotting mid month. Since this was a change from the first Mirena, I went to the GYN and no cysts etc, everything seemed normal. they said not to worry about the bleeding.
The reason I am posting here is the last few months I have been starting to exercise regularly. particularly running a few times a week (mostly every other day). But every time I run I end up with quite a bit of cramping after my run is finished, and also quite frequent spotting. It feels like after running I am getting my period, and after longer runs (about 7-12km) I just want to sit in bed with a hot water bottle on my tummy. It is quite worrying that now I have "period cramps" almost every other day. Directly after exercising, and spotting much more frequently.
Dont know if this has anything to do with mirena, but i do have this problem with running and I have mirena. It is also possible that I have increased my exercise level too rapidily, and I am pushing myself too hard. I was also feeling a bit nauseas as well as the cramping, after running for the first weeks but have corrected this by changing my eating habits and having small snacks 20 mins before and after my runs... Just recently I read that you can get period cramping from over exertion with exercise. So I am going to try running 5km or less each run for a couple of weeks and work up to 10km again slowly, and see if that improves the situation with the cramping. if not I am going to see the Dr to check if this is more serious.
