Can I respond to this tomorrow? I'm planning on going to my first track work out in months tonight. Yikes. I'm sure we'll do 400s or 800s because that is what we always do, but I actually don't mind doing miles on a track. At least it's flat, unlike most of the terrain around here!
LOL @ being trapped on the track and forced to finish the workout.
The guy that wrote my latest marathon plan suggests that I alternate long run weeks with mile repeat weeks, so every other weekend instead of a long run he wants me to do: w/u 8-12 x 1 mile on the track (# depends on how far into the plan) c/d
I did this several years ago with one of his plans. It was brutal. At least my H and dog volunteered to do them with me.

I've got that workout scheduled for this week. I guess I like the misery. I feel like I can go faster on the track than I can on the road. I have a hard time finding a flat mile with no road crossings too.
4 miles @ HM pace. aka 16 laps. I guess it's easier to maintain a steady pace on the track but hot damn that was simultaneously boring and hard.
I think that would be fun IF there were other people running your pace because then you can chit-chat.
I would not do that workout without company, lol. It seems like a good way to make someone go crazy!
there was no chatting aside from dudes asking me how many laps we had left. there were two dudes who were running with me but they were pretty much using me as their pacer (and lap counter). which meant they were right at my shoulder the entire time. and there was no effing way I was going to let them pass me so it ended up being faster than HM pace and each mile was progressively faster. I think we finished at like 10K pace. whoopsies! also, it was 'wintry mixing' while we were doing this.
I felt good and drained after and there's no way I would have been able to run that fast that night w/o those dudes on my ass, but while we were doing it I recall being pretty miserable.

I have a hard time finding a flat mile too but I dont run much faster on the track. I think there is something more motivating about getting from point A to point B rather than running a circle just to run it again. The nice thing about the track though is that you dont have to do any mile repeats into a headwind. BUT, you also dont get to do any into a tailwind.
It's not necessarily a track workout but I did 5 miles on the track when I had both kids with me over Christmas. My friend came along and we brought donuts and toys so the kids could amuse themselves on the grass in the center. 20 laps is a lot of circling.

I think for some reason, intervals feel more "honest" on the track. It's been crazy windy here lately so I either get the option of running into a headwind or a tail wind. Which to pick...
H is huge on track workouts so I think some of that does rub off on me. He loved to 10K in track though so he's just all kinds of crazy. 25 laps, no thank you!
You guys are nuts!! I've done mile repeats on the track twice, & that was enough. I usually always take it to the road for anything over 1200s. 4 miles at HM pace? No, just no. I guess you work on your mental game! Lol
