Oh wise H&F, what are your thoughts on working a sprint tri into the early parts of my return to running/marathon training?
I am returning to running after a stress fracture and doc has said he thinks i will be "more than fine" to continue training for Marine Corps once I finish my return to running program. (He's a runner and very knowledgable about marathoning etc)
SO I know I need to continue to cross train and the best way to keep me honest is to sign up for something. Yea or nay on working a sprint tri in?

I've done tri training mixed in with marathon training before. I can normally only run 4-5 days a week before my body stops liking it. I'm sure your plan would work out fine.
My weeks normally end up being 4-5 days running 1-2 days swimming 1 day biking (I don't have many good bike routes around here so I get bored. I also bike ~50 minutes a day to work and back)
I haven't tried it, but I've watched several of my tri buddies do it. One did MCM in 2011 after a tri season, so the early part of marathon training was still during tri season, and another friend trained for NYCM this year, similar situation. (She ultimately ran a different marathon a week later.) It seems pretty do-able watching them.
Funny you asked this question. I'm just trying to plan my training today. I'm doing an Oly tri Aug 10th and then the NYCM Nov 3rd so I'll have about a month of training cross over. I want to make sure I'm training enough without over training for the run. My experience so far with training for an Oly tri and a half-marathon is that the cross-training seems to be serving me well with my running because I'm only running 2 days a week right now and I'm running pretty well. I guess I'll know the answer for sure after the half-marathon on Sunday though!
