Thank you all so much for your advice about racing in the rain and the extra things I should consider. I took a lot of your advice and was glad I planned ahead -- it rained a TON -- the full time I was running. There were actually flood warnings in the areas surrounding Nashville.
I had an awesome race and, as my first, I consider it all a great success. Despite the rain, I had a blast and was so inspired by all the people that came out to cheer us on. I even beat all my goals -- finishing in 4:10:13 (my goals were: to finish, then to finish in 4:30, and then to finish in 4:15). I know I don't always post a ton but I do enjoy reading all of your perspectives and I learned a lot from you all in being prepared for the race. Not sure what is next on the horizon for me but I am looking forward to taking a few days off and then hitting in the trails again!
Great job!! That is a wonderful first marathon; especially in such wet weather. Do you have another in your plans, or just focused on recovery for now?

Thanks so much, everyone! thom not sure what I'll do next. I honestly don't know that I will ever do a full again. We have a new half coming to my area in Oct that I will probably look into. I do know I'd like to focus on some speed work. clseale I'd read that Nashville was a tough one and very hilly -- I live in a pretty hilly area and trained the hills a lot so I didn't think it was that bad at all. There was 1 hill in mile 23 that looked daunting in the moment but that's about it. It does kind of intrigue me about what it would be like to race something pancake flat!

Is this the one on Oct 20? The Bull City Race Fest Half in Durham? If so, there's an early registration discount, $10 off with the code RUNLOCAL, expires May 1. I signed up a couple of weeks ago

Great job on the marathon! Congrats!
That's the one!! I liked them on FB and saw the coupon code. I don't think I can commit to the date quite yet, just in case -- we will have a nephew turning 1 plus a niece turning 2 and another niece/nephew due any day, all within a few days of one another and the race so I'm hesitant to sign up until I hear from the all of the respective siblings about their plans for family gatherings. My family had to give up a lot of traveling for my training over the past few months so I'm treading lightly before I ask for more time.
Great job! What did you end up wearing? I am looking at possibly rain for my half this weekend and am trying to figure it out
I didn't change a whole lot clothes wise -- I wore my fav pair of Nike shorts, a brooks short sleeve tee with a brooks long sleeve over it. My important rain prep was: a visor, a poncho until race start and I body glided my entire body -- and I mean ENTIRE body, head to toe.
I had a spare tech tee and socks in DH's backpack just in case I needed to stop along the way and change into a few dry pieces. I also threw my bodyglide in there.
Lucky for me (ha ha!) it never stopped raining the entire race so I never had to deal with drying out and the chafing that came from wet on dry or the issue of being colder with warmer/dry air and wet clothes.
