I've been in the same type shoes for about 4 years now-Nike Structure Triax. I've been refitted just about every year and it's stayed the same.
In 2012 I hit 750 miles, starting a couple weeks into the new year since I had DS at the end of 2011. I was refitted for shoes then. I did 2 half marathons at the end of the year (Sept and Dec) and my mileage was 80-90/mo at the end of 2012.
This year's goal is 1000 miles. I have 385 for the year so far. I switched shoes at the beginning of February and have 291 miles on this pair, about 75% on roads, 25% on sidewalks. For the past month, I've had sore hips-in the front on both sides, and occasionally sore knees.
I'm not sure if it's the shoes or if something else is wrong. It's the same on both sides. Time to get refitted, time to switch shoes, or time to see a doctor? I usually get about 350 miles on a pair of shoes before I start noticing knee soreness, never had hip soreness before.
The only other thing that's changed is I'm now at a desk job and sitting about 90% of the time vs. being out and active about 50% of the time.
Thanks. It's definitely just soreness, I'll check out the Brooks. I originally went with the Nikes because I had bunion surgery a few years back and they were the only ones I could fit in without going to wide shoes-which were too wide.
Are you strength training at all? Hip and knee issues can sometimes be linked to weak/inefficient glutes (even if you run a lot). Glute bridges, fire hydrants, and deadlifts are great for activating them.
I wear the Triaxs too. I ditto foam rolling. It helps immensely. What Triax are you in?
I didn't like the 14s as much as previous models but the 15s were better.
Also, I have read multiple places that Triaxs wear out much sooner than other shoes. I replace mine every 300 or so and really, they are WORN by then, the treads are flat.
I need to look into those Brooks. I haven't read good things about the 16s and I am due for new ones soon.
Thanks everyone. I used to do a lot of strength training but it's fallen by the wayside. I need to re-work my schedule to get it back in there.
gummybear-I'm going to break out my 16s tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. I hadn't read that about the Triax wearing out sooner, though it makes sense since most of my running friends regularly tell me they have 500+ miles on their shoes before they need to be replaced (mainly Brooks).

gummybear-ran in the 16s today. I ordered online and didn't ever try them on. They're a bit narrower than previous models, but no sore hips while running. They rubbed the scar from my bunion surgery funny on my left foot but not my right... I have a feeling that they'll stretch out a bit over the next couple runs.
I have noticed with the 15s and now the 16s that there doesn't seem to be as much support in the arches. I'm going to give these some time, but may check out the Brooks that someone else posted above. It hasn't really been an issue, but it feels a little funny when I first put them on. I have a pair of 14s that are my yard shoes and the support is noticeably different to me.
The sitting at a desk part is what gets me. Especially if I run and THEN go sit at my desk for a few hours I stiffen right up. I have started standing at my laptop on the days when I run and it seems to help. I don't know if that's practical for you to do that but just getting up and walking around a bit after sitting for a while may help.

Thank you!! I may head to my local running store and try the Brooks too.
