I am so sorry your dealing with this. I would be scared as well.
I would try un-crating the dog at night though. We have two GSD's, one 95 pound pure blood and a mix. They are all about protecting and sleep right next to us every night. I dare anybody come into our house.

Our house got broken into a long time ago. I left our back door unlocked ( ) and they were trolling the alley because it was winter break and most people were out of of town. Our rottweiler went ballistic at the sound of the door being opened and they took off. Dogs are great.
Holy shit, steph, I'm so sorry. I'm glad everyone is okay though! We installed an alarm system after one of our neighbors had their house broken into. If you're friendly with your neighbors, you might want to stop by and warn them, just in case these asshole kids or whoever decide to try on someone else's house.
I hope they catch them.
When the cops showed up last night, the entire neighborhood was out in the street trying to find out what was going on. One couple that lives a few houses down had mentioned that their screen was on the ground the other night but didn't report it because nothing was missing.
I'm so sorry. I know how much it freaks me out when our lab randomly starts barking during the night just at a raccoon or coyote. I can't imagine how much it would terrify me to know she was barking because someone had come into our home.
I think the thing that makes me most upset about this is now H is walking around all smug because he's always 'guns are good, we need guns in the house, blah blah blah' and I'm always like 'we don't need guns, we're safe, guns won't help'.
I've been able to hold my ground about how I don't approve of them. He can have his hunting guns, unloaded, locked up in the basement. Now, I'm going to have to fight harder to keep them there.
Oh my goodness. Sit his crate right next to the window next time, lol. Seriously though that sucks. Someone broke into my car once and I felt so violated, so I cannot begin to imagine how you feel about someone being inside your home.
I'm sorry. Our previous apartment was broken in to when we weren't there, and four years later I well remember how violated I felt. It's very unnerving.
