If you keep track of your mileage, do you have yearly goals?
my easy goal is to run 750 miles in 2013, my challenge goal is to run 1000. Right now, I'm on track for about 930 for the year but ill be training for a half in the fall and I expect that I just might make 1000. Which for me would be huge
I don't, on purpose. Entering 2013 I was coming off an injury, and I specifically didn't want to set myself up for a "failure" if another injury somewhere in the 12 months threw me off track. Bite size goals. One training cycle at a time.
I enjoy looking at the total for the year each December, but that's all. For me focusing on total mileage over a long haul would make it harder for me to make smart choices about rest and health. I don't want to encourage those thoughts. I also, possibly more importantly, didn't want to let an arbitrary number goal factor into my decisions about how to balance swim/bike/run workouts.
Nope. I like to have wiggle room for injuries. Time related goals are more motivating for me, and really I can't hit my time goals with out getting in the mileage anyway.
I have in the past a year is a long time and I have a hard time thinking about my running like that. I do like to see how many miles I ran in a year at the end of the year.
I've set yearly goals the last two years and didn't make it either time. I think the first year my goal was a little lofty, and last year I got injured, so that put that goal right down the toilet.
I have an idea of how much I'd like to run, but we'll see how the year progresses.

No, just because I started the year injured and didn't want to set myself up for failure like that. But I do have individual, timed, measurable goals for swimming, biking and running, just to accomplish over the year that I'm working towards.

I'm a pretty new runner and seeing the progress toward that cumulative goal makes me happy. My goal is 300 miles for the year, but since I registered for 2 unplanned halfs in the fall and next year, so I'll probably beat that. But I wanted a reasonable goal.
