There was a thing about this on our news last night and it got me thinking. Soooo, humor me.
On zillow, put in your zip code, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms in your current house, and the $$ number that would be the *absolute* max for you (you don't have to post your parameters, FYI). ETA: Don't add in pending listings. Only homes that are active on the market/not pending.
How many houses come up? How many of those are condos? PIP the best one?
Um...there are no homes for sale in my zip code with the numbers I entered. If I drop $10K then one house pops up. No pics available, just a street map. Weird.
Two split levels, one rather tiny rancher in a craptastic neighborhood, and one blah "colonial" One of the splits is a short sale.
None of the photos want to load.
If i drop the number of bathrooms to what our house had when we bought it (2.5 vs. 3) there are 31 results, but nothing is grabbing me.
There are two houses for sale in my neighborhood that aren't showing up. Makes me wonder if they are under contract already. If so it'd be a quick sale on both, so that's cool.

Results: 4 (6 if I include condos)
Increases to 9 if I raise the price by $100k.
That said I ran for the first time in forever yesterday and I was almost surprised by the increased number of for sale signs - not necessary reflected above because my neighborhood has lots of homes that are double what we paid for ours.

The housing market here is a total seller's market right now. Our neighbor (a realtor) said in April her office had 20 sales and 12 of them went for over asking within a week of the listing.
SFH: 2 Condos: 0 Best one: I'm not really a fan of this house but it's better than the other one listed. It's a block from us so we went to look at the open house. It's a flip (complete gut and added a second floor) and it looks like a rushed job (they were bought it in November, did all the work, and it went back on the market last week).
Zillow says 5, but it's not very reliable, IME. I don't really like any of them. I'm glad I didn't wait to buy, I wouldn't be having any luck. Even halfway decent homes are selling fast around here.
This is the nicest (but it's not as nice as ours) and it's also more expensive than ours. It's listed on Zillow as FSBO. I sure am glad I'm not looking for a house now!
It is very close to our same sq. footage (onl/y 60 sq. ft. more) but it is $12k more than we paid for our new construction home. This house is 11 years old. It makes me love my house even more.
I am on the edge of two zip codes. I tried both. 0 house come up with my characteristics which is odd because there are a number of houses for sale in my neighborhood. I didn't think that I had such and odd mix of characteristics.

4 houses 1 condo
However, a brief peek at the listings says we wouldn't have bothered to look at any of them in person when we were house hunting last year. One is on a postage stamp lot, and the others are all more than a mile from the public transit.
We feel very fortune to have purchased our house when we did. The market was just turning the corner from a buyers' market to a sellers' market when we put the offer in on our short sale. And, while it took 9 months to close, thank goodness it didn't fall through, because the options for sale in the past year have just sucked.
How many houses come up? 12 How many of those are condos? 4 PIP the best one? They are all pretty awful for one reason or another (looks, neighborhood, the fact that it's a condo). Glad we're not looking right now!
Zillow is giving me several results that aren't in the zip code I specified. There are 10 in our zip.
This is the best one I think. It's pretty similar to our house, although I prefer our location (much better elementary school and more convenient, and we have a much better lot). Our house was much less than this house (we signed with our builder in Dec 2011).
