My mom and my sisters and I have always visualized letters and numbers in certain colors, and I figured everybody could do it. But DH thinks I'm nuts when I talk about it. I'm wondering how many people actually do have synesthesia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia.
Steve Holt? Is that you? WTF are you talking about?
It's me! LOL I know it's nuts. DH thinks I'm making it up. But every since I could remember, I see letters and numbers with specific colors. For instance, Loony looks like yellow-orange-orange-green-pink in my head. April 26 is the prettiest date on the calendar because it's red-pink-red-white-yellow, and 26 is blue-pink. I sound like a nutcase but I've met other people who are the same way, just with different colors.
also, when i was little and we had to recite multiplication tables, it was like playing candyland in my head. i would just hop from square to square in sequential order, because i can see the whole number timeline in my head like on a board game.
this makes no sense lololol.
Mine is more of a slope - I see numbers 1-10 going uphill, then 11-20 going downhill, then 21-30 going uphill, etc. When I was doing math I'd just pick out the right hill and work within that.
I see numbers in my head in a weird way, it's hard to explain, but it's not color. It's position in relation to the others around it, like dots on a die. So eight is always on the middle right, 7 is middle bottom, five is exactly center, 6 is middle top, etc. Starting at 11 it starts over to the left of the first set.
ETA I'm a freeeeeeeak.
My sister is all this up hurr, in addition to the specific colors. There's a number line, I guess you could call it and then certain letters and numbers are certain colors.

lol that sounds exhausting. I don't visualize number in my head. At least I don't think so. I just "know" they are there. Like, I can do pretty good mental calculations, but I never "see" the numbers when I do.
I see months in colors. That's about the extent of it. I also see them in a certain position/chart in my head. Sometimes the colors aren't well-defined, but they're there.
I tried explaining this to my mother when I was very little, and she thought I was crazy -- but my dad understood.
Yes, this! Days of the week, for me.
I see them in a looped position in my head. Same with months (although I don't see those in color).
I think, for me, part of it is that I work at a college, so my life revolves around the academic semester set up. I see a calendar year as Sept - Dec and then January to May. The summer kind of floats in between.
This is really interesting! Does reading text ever interfere with what you see in your head? In other words, when you're reading this message board, do you see the text in black or is there an overlap between black and the colors?
Chromesthesia is so interesting to me! Is it mostly with music, or other sounds?
Primarily with music. I was a music major first. I play four instruments and sing.
I've heard that the most gifted musicians often have some form of chromesthesia, just like the most gifted mathematicians often have the spacial form of synesthesia. Do the colors help you memorize the music?

Around here, the bus system has a number and a color. So, you can take the 2 Red or the 6 Green, etc. My sister has gotten on the wrong bus because when she sees the 2, it's green, which makes her think she's taking the Green.

I don't see colors when I'm reading, but I do see them when I'm writing. It helps with spelling - if the color doesn't fit in the word it's spelled wrong.
I thought I was alone. Like Lucy, I see months in colors. I also see the alphabet like a road that curves and has a gradual peak. It's hard to explain how it looks in my head. When I mention it to anyone they look at me like I have 10 heads.
So do you see the word "september" in brown? when you think of september? Or do you have an image of the season? If I think of september, I have an image of the trees and the light in early fall. If I think of january, it is snow and a feeling of cold. But I don't see words.

Maybe? I don't know. I do know that I always memorized my music very quickly compared to others.
