DD2 just fell on the sidewalk and chipped her tooth...pretty much in half, diagonally. I've got a call in to her dentist's emergency line, but now I'm freaking the fuck out about how much it's going to cost. We have insurance, but it looks like it only covers 50% of the cost. It's her front tooth, and of course, it's a permanent one, otherwise I'd just say pull it and be done.
What's probably going to happen? Anyone willing to share costs?
Fret not. I've had a ton of dental work done on all of my front teeth. the dentist purposely removed about half of my front teeth and built them up with what's called 'bonding'. It's essentially the same material as white fillings. It will last her about 10-15 years before she'll have to have it redone but it's strong enough for me to bite into apples etc.
Oh and the reason we did this is because due to tetracycline use when I was 2 weeks old (I almost died, long story) all of my permanent teeth came in yellow/orange. You can't tell one bit from looking at me.
I had to have a tooth re-done about 10 years ago and it cost me $300 out of pocket at the time. I had no insurance at all. If your dentist bills it as a 'filling' I'm betting your insurance will cover more.

DS chip his front tooth in half and it cost about 200 to fix and I don't have dental insurance. This was maybe a month ago. They bonded a new piece on it.
I did the same thing to my front tooth when I was 12. I got bonding. It fell off a few times, most likely because my front two teeth weren't even. Bonding isn't that expensive. The actual crown, which she will need eventually, will be expensive. I got mine at age 20. The dentist wanted to make sure my mouth had stopped growing. He said my bonding would've lasted longer, but we wanted to do it before I aged off my mom's dental insurance. Try not to freak out too much. It will be ok.
Lurker, my oldest chipped his permanent front tooth and they filed it down. It's shorter but it had no nerve damage. He didn't want it crowned as it would have been more painful for him to go through. They had to hold him down to deal with the needle to numb to file it so I let it be his call.
Thanks, guys. I still haven't even heard back from the dentist, which *seriously* bugs me...why put an emergency number on the machine if you aren't going to return the call? My friend at school's brother is a dentist, so I might just take her there in the morning.
Oh, and I'm about 99% sure DD3 has a bladder infection, so there's that to deal with tomorrow as well.
Ahhhh poor girls & poor momma . If she is in pain you may be able to find after hours care just like an urgent care? If its jus cosmetic, im sure they can fit her in tmrw. Maybe enfuego has more info - her H is a dentist.

I can ditto this. I shattered the bottom front four teeth (I also almost died, long story) and had them bonded. I've never had to get mine redone and its been 22 years.
Tara, get thee to a wine rack and a bottle opener. Glass optional. ::hugs::
Ditto x2, except it was my top front 4 and my life was not in danger, just my face.
I DID have to have mine redone, though. 17 years later they were pretty ugly (but I was a smoker for a lot of those years) so I had 2 porcelain veneers and 2 porcelain crowns done right before my wedding. My insurance covered a little more than 1/2 of that because they were replacing the bonding (if it had been purely cosmetic- no missing teeth- it wouldn't have covered anything)
Luckily for my dad the dentist was nice enough to give me back my teeth the first time around looking much straighter than they had originally so what he paid to fix them was offset by the fact that I no longer needed braces lol
I chipped one of my front teeth when I was 7. I had to have the repair redone for the second time a couple of years ago and it was about $300 but my dentist billed it to insurance as a filling and so it was covered however my insurance covered fillings.
