I just got the Samsung Galaxy S4 and love it. I think the biggest selling point for me was the 13 MP camera lol. However, this is my first smartphone ever, so I have no basis for comparison. I need to charge it every night, and it seems to take a long time to charge, but I have no idea if that is just par for the course with smartphones.
Giant Android nerd/lurker jumping in. I just got the Nexus 4 and it is amazing. I run a custom kernel on it called Franco. It allows you to down clock your processor while you aren't using your phone. It dramatically increases battery life. It is $4.99 on play store and it is totally worth it.

I had a droid Bionic and it SUCKED. It had a manufacturing flaw, (mine was replaced THREE TIMES in just over a year) but they kept selling it. POS.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 and love it. They just came out with the S4 and it looks amazing.
ETA: When I had the Bionic, I would often have to charge in the afternoon because the battery life was soooo bad. With the S3, I still usually have 50% battery by the time I plug it in before I go to bed, and with heavy use, maybe 30%. But I've never run out of battery during the day.
I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 (I think...maybe 2?) I've had it for over a year and I like it. It does get buggy at times. I've hears the Google phone ifs a good option and this one doesn't get system updates anymore.
Battery is ok, I charge it every other night or so, but it is on airplane mode during the day. My friends with IPhones complain about battery, though, so I think it's just smart phones

I am EXACTLY this: both a lurker and an Android nerd. DH and I also both have the Nexus 4 and we love them. I think he's hacked his and has a special kernel running on it, but I don't let him hack mine. (He's had to reformat one too many phones. ) Mine runs on the stock OS/kernels and all is well. My battery life is amazing. Pictures are outstanding. Solid phone. I'm super in love with it; I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever and we've had them since they first launched (November-ish, I think).

I also run a custom OS on my Nexus 4 (and I am posting right now from my Nexus 10). I also ended up saving about $15 a month on my phone bill with the new Tmobile plan options. I lurve my 4.
