I know, you don't usually see these posts on Fridays. An org I'm involved with sponsored a 5k today (and there were a good number of people there, like a few hundred). It's a difficult, hilly course. I rarely run 5ks, so there was a good opportunity for me to PR. I can't even remember what my old 5k PR was, but last year I ran this same race in 29:45. I ran it this year in 24:57.
Thanks for all of the advice in the post below. I followed your advice and warmed up for about a mile with a slow jog, and tried to reign in my pace for the first mile. I definitely went out too fast, but I realized that when I looked at my Garmin, so I slowed down a bit to save my energy. The last mile was almost all uphill, which was brutal.
The same time last year would've won my age group, but this year I think I came in 4th or 5th. Oh well, I'm still thrilled with my time!
Side note: A couple of weeks ago, I decided one of my goals for this summer was to improve my 5k and 10k times, and specifically run a sub-25 minute 5k. I guess I need a new goal now... maybe sub-24?
