I have no opinion on brand, but I think the idea of video monitors is great! I say go for it. Just send a gift receipt in case they/or family did purchase some already.
I can't find a registry unfortunately (I would have started there instead of the GBCN ;-). They are crunchy but he is a tech geek. I was hoping there's a monitor that will play nicely with the iPhone but it doesn't look like there's a great option. I'll check out the Mama Roo.

I have a few friends that buy sercurity camera instead of baby monitors because you can download an app and use your phone. You can even talk to through it. And its like half the price.
Thank you everyone. This is all helpful. Zeum looks really cool - how did I not know about this before? I have asked DH to text to find out if there's a registry they have just hidden or something.
My search is complicated enormously by the fact that she changed her last name when they got married. But not to his last name. To a name she invented. And I have no idea if he did some hyphenation with her new name or something. But I can't find anything at Babies R Us/ Toys R Us under any of their names I know. I can't remember the new last name though. HIPPIES.
I bet if the wanted/needed a video monitor, they would already have one. Especially since the baby is already born. I second a trendy new baby carrier of some sort.
Bay area crunchy, techie maybe moneyed? Look for registries at Tiny Tots diaper service (the registry has many non diaper related things), Sprout, Giggle.
I don't know that zeum targets the really little kids. The Bay Discovery Museum in Sausalito is great for the tiny set but still isn't applicable until crawling.
If the baby is already born, and you think they have everything they need, then a savings bond might be a good gift. Especially if they don't have a lot of room for stuff. Speaking as a parent who feels guilty when my kids grow out of their expensive things so quickly.
Thanks sonrisa. We actually were able to reach the dad and he was just about to buy the Motorola Blink 1, so an easy solution! I found the registry, it was hidden under his wife's middle name (thank you Facebook for supplying that info).
