She celebrated her 95th birthday on May 1. Thank God her four children were all able to fly to Florida to celebrate with her. Her son (DH's uncle) has suffered from Parkinson's for the past several years and it has gotten progressively worse and his wife is currently battling an aggressive cancer; they haven't been able to travel for several years because of it but they were able to make it this year for her 95th. She moved down to Florida to live with MIL shortly after GFIL passed away about five years ago. She was a fairly healthy and mentally sharp until she had surgery 2.5 years ago. She was kept tied and sedated at the hospital because she was a "difficult patient" who would get out of bed and harangue the (poor) nurses before she was moved to hospice, where she stabilized but declined into dementia and physical infirmity and never fully recovered.
She gave away a lot of her possessions before she moved to Florida. DH and I are in possession of a scrapbook of her life that she put together for her 80th birthday. We will have to pull it out today and he will have to bring it with him to the memorial service.
She lived a long and blessed life, with a few hiccups along the way. She was a tough old bird who took no nonsense from anyone and raised a pretty amazing woman who became my MIL, and helped her raise a pretty amazing son. We were fortunate to have her in our lives for so long.
