Mel, these women have had several miscarriages attributed to malnutrition. Looks can be deceiving. The woman that was there the longest, Knight, is reported to be in the worst shape physically.

I wasn't thinking they were super healthy but I was surprised they weren't closer to death. I probably watch too much Crimial Minds.
Her sister was just on and made a brief statement asking people to respect their privacy and give them some time and space so that they can all basically acclimate. She took no questions.
Her mother... ::shakes head:: I don't even know where to begin. I can't get over the fact that NO ONE KNEW SHE HAD A MISSING DAUGHTER.
I saw the Today interview w/ her mother and it was ... odd. But who knows how long she's been neighbors w/ the people who didn't know. Meaning - if she's lived there since before her daughter disappeared and they never knew? That's really odd. But if they've only lived there a few years, I can see that it's possible that she didn't share that information.
Gina DeJesus is back home, also at her sister's. Her sister made a statement thanking everyone, stating she was putting her foot down about contact because they need time to recover and when ready they will answer questions. She asked the community to not retaliate against the family of the brothers and to let the legal system do it's job that they would get the job done. She thanked the community, police, FBI, etc. She also reminded everyone that there is a 4th missing girl from the community, Ashley Summers and they need to work to find her. There have been reports that Ashley, et al were aware of a 4th girl who was there but disappeared, I think several years ago.
Interesting stuff about Michele Knight. Her brother is quoted as saying they didn't think she was missing. They thought she was at a brother's (or BIL's) that they didn't have a phone number for. Also at one time the hospital said all 3 were released but they are not saying Michele Knight is there and is in good condition. They stand by both statements to I'm guessing she was released and then maybe re-admittmed. I've heard she has hearing loss and other permanent damage due to beatings.

IDK. If it were me and my child was missing, everyone I'd ever met would know. Especially my neighbors. It would be something I'd never give up on and I'd make sure to show a picture of her at least once, because you never know where that child could end up and who could have seen her.

My gut says her mother gave up on her.
I don't disagree with you. I just think how her mom lives in Florida and all this happened in Cleveland (I think her mom lived in FL at the time she disappeared!) - I can see how she may have not talked about it alot down there, or at least to "new" neighbors (if these people are in fact new). Who the heck knows.
I have not read all the articles posted. It seems odd to me that people her mother associated with don't know, but then again, I don't know my neighbors at all. I say hi to a couple of them, but have never had a real conversation with them. If my daughter went missing in a city/state I was not living there, I have no need to go knocking on doors in my area to find her, so I guess I cn see how it would happen.
The Michele Knight situation makes me so sad. Here she was, locked in a basement and the subject of all sorts of abuse and no one was looking for her. Not really. She wasn't a kid. It was assumed that she disappeared by choice. I don't know how or if her family advocated for her at the time, but no one else did. It didn't get the media attention of the others and I'm certain she didn't have as many police resources dedicated to finding her either. What a mistake- one of many. There are just so many "if onlys" regarding this whole entire situation. It really is heartbreaking.
I agree Muddled- it is sad. People DID give up on her, I think. SHe was an adult, so they just assumed she got up and left. And her little boy! Who isn't so little now! He grew up w/o her - partially because no one "really" thought anything was wrong.
