Do you absolutely dry clean everything that says dry clean? I read in real simple that dry clean only means you MUST dry clean, but when it just says dry clean, it's a suggestion and preferred but maybe you can get away with washing it at home, depending on the item.
WDYT? what are your guidelines? Ex) my j crew minnies say to dry clean! I think it's a little silly but I do it.... always wonder if I really have to...

For the most part, I do follow those directions. But, if the material feels like something that I think could go in the washer I try it. It hasn't backfired yet. I am just really careful about breaking that rule and, so far, have guessed right.
Depends on what it is. I have a few dresses that I only dry clean, though some can be washed but I would need to spend time ironing them. So it's worth it to me to take it in so I don't have to iron.
Sweaters I only dry clean, but I will sometimes throw it in the dryer on low (without washing) and put some fabreeze and dryer sheets to freshen it up so I don't have to spend on cleaning as often.

I have washed and dried my jcrew minnies and they still look good to me. One pair is about 2 years old now and I can see the black is starting to fade but after 2 years of pretty constant wear I am okay with that.
I also have a jersey dress from Ann Taylor that says dry clean but has done well in the wash.
I have a silk tucker blouse that is dry clean and I'll prob stick to those directions because silk can be tricky.
As for your dress, in my experience Aqua items dont wash well even if that's what the tag says...so if you love it, I think it would retain its shape better if you dry clean.
I don't wash it in the laundry, but dry clean only items generally sit on top of my laundry basket for months.
There's a dry cleaners by my parents (ZIPS) that cleans anything for 99c. So I have a really hard time spending $6 cleaning something here. I accumulate a large pile of stuff and get it everything cleaned when I visit my parents.
