You have to wash the whole diaper with pockets. The benefit with them is you can adjust the absorbency to your needs by adding extra inserts, and they dry faster than AIOs.

Exactly. I also like that if I wanted to "revitalize" the diapers, I could buy new inserts for much less than buying entirely new diapers. Or if I started with microfiber inserts and decided hemp or bamboo would work better for some situations, I could easily switch out the inners.
yup you have to wash the whole thing as the inserts are under the microsuede layer, so the whole thing gets peed on
an AI2 system like Flips would allow you to just change the insert and not always have to change the cover, same with prefolds w/covers or fitteds w/covers.
AIOs are the easiest laundry-wise, but I don't like how they fit (too bulky). Our favorites are BG 4.0s. Some of the cheaper ones (Kawaii) have too many snaps.
Stuffing the pockets isn't that big of a deal. Unstuffing is gross, but it's not that bad.
We used prefolds with covers when DS was a newborn and going through a lot of diapers - easy to wash and then fold, and you could use the same cover a couple of times with different prefolds. It was also easier to tailor them to his size to make sure they fit him, so we didnt have any leaks (when he was born, we had leaks with the BG and even the fuzzibunz, bc he was longer and his legs didnt fill out the leg-holes - and he was well over 9lbs, so not like he was a small baby).
We thought we would love the AIOs and we aren't really a fan. BG has one that we love - the Freetime - but that is the only AIO we have liked so far. Overall once he hit about 4 months, the bum genius 4.0 became our go-to.
