My current boss is leaving the organization in a month (he was only going to be an executive here for a few months anyway, it was mutually agreed upon.) He's asked me to leave and go with him to his new place. We're going to discuss the opportunity at length in the next few days. I know that the position will be similar to what I'm doing now and in a slightly different, but still political field. I believe, from my limited knowledge, it's in the direction I'd like to pursue in the next few years.
Knowing this, what should I have prepared to ask during our discussion beyond salary, benefits, who I would report to (if not him), what the future prospects are, etc. I just want to make sure I have my ducks in a row. He's smart. I'm smart. We know the other person is smart. So I want to have a good idea of what I need to ask for before I go there.
FWIW, I'm happy at my current place and he knows that. I've only been here 7 months and I just received a bonus at my 6 month mark (at his discretion.)
Congrats! I think you have a lot of the good questions already. By "benefits" I assume you are including sick/vacation, retirement, medical/dental, STD/LTD, etc. Other than that I would want to know more about the other place. Why is he going there? What is the work environment? I know he hasn't started yet but there has to be something that is pulling him to this new place.
He went from a mid-high level position at my current office to interim exec. He will be THE exec at the new place. He didn't want to be my current office's permanent exec because it would require moving his family, whereas this new place does it as he'll just travel all the time. For the record, I would not be moving. The new office will be equally close to home. Because it's new there is no work environment yet, but with his leadership so far at my current place, I can expect it to be equally good, if not better.
It kind of doesn't sound like that's a job offer, more like an opportunity. You would still have to be hired by the other organization, right? In that case, he may not be able to tell you accurately about the benefits and salary.
Possibly? At this time I think he's hiring everyone, including me. In out work it's not uncommon for someone to be hired quietly and just brought in. Still, you make an excellent point that he may not have all the details re: benefits and salary yet. I guess we'll see in a few days!
