I used to have something quite similar, and when I moved, I ended up donating it to Katrina victims. It started looking very "little old lady" to me, and I wasn't a fan of it towards the end. It's got that "classic" look, but I wouldn't buy it today. NMS (anymore).
I like it. It's very pretty and you can tell it's well made. It's got good bones and detailing. I have no issues with oak or that color stain however. I actually prefer it in a lot of cases.
Signed Dairy, Proud owner of a 1985 bedroom set, so anything else is totally wonderful.

Here's the thing (please bear with me, I ramble, I'm sorry!):
DH and I are still using his old childhood bedroom set. It's a dresser and two nightstands. Everything else in the room is just hodge-podge and cheap. Nothing well made except DH's childhood bedroom furniture. We have a king bed but the frame is cheap.
My 2nd son needs a bedroom set (dresser and nightstand specifically since he already has a bed and headboard).
A little old lady down the street is planning to move soon and has some furniture she is looking to get rid of. I befriended her a few months ago and she's nice enough to give me first dibs, lol. She also has a couch she is looking to sell, which I actually really like but she hasn't given a price yet.
She said she paid over 5k for the bedroom set a few years ago and that it's not that old. She is asking 1k for the entire bedroom set.
I'm not a huge fan of the honey color (and for some reason when I recalled it in my memory, it was a lighter-oak color and not the honey color).... but I could really use an "adult" bedroom set!! I'm sick of having a hodge podge bedroom set. This one doesn't seem that old (but I am horrible at guessing at that sort of thing) and I would think putting some nice knobs on it would update it dramatically. I'm not head over heels for it but I do like it. My issue is that the bedroom sets I fall head-over-heels for are easily 5-7k with all the pieces we would need.
So if you were me, would you buy this set for 1k? Do you think that's a fair amount for all the pieces or would you try to talk her down more? (I feel that 1k is fair for all the pieces, but at the same time, it is a little more than I'd like to spend).
FWIW while I love several 5-7k bedroom sets, there is no point in the near or forseeable future that I can see us spending that much on a master bedroom set. Even if we saved the money for one, I would much rather allocate those funds for something other than a master bedroom set. So 1k is about what I'd be looking to spend....

I love it. But I like that color of wood, and I don't mind oak at all. And like you, we currently have crap (just a metal bed frame and two target particle board end tables, with mismatched dressers) and 5-7k will be in the budget in approximately never years.
NMS, but I am not a fan of matching furniture sets.
This.
I do like the style, particularly the headboard, but the whole set is too much for me. I think it takes away from the beauty of the pieces when there is so much sameness going on.

NMS - it looks well made, but I think $1k isn't too bad. I'd try to get it all for $800 since it would be tough to move even just down the street since it's so big and so many pieces.
Could you buy it and then sell one or two of the pieces on craigslist to recoup some of the cost? You might not need two armoires , you could sell one or both of those and the nightstands. Then you could mix in some other pieces to shake it up and tone down the look.
$1000 for that many pieces of solid oak is a good price. Possibly you can use some of the pieces in other rooms. I'm not in to painting good wood but if you aren't crazy about all the honey oak, maybe you could paint it white or some other color that you like.
I like it. Could you split up some of the pieces in other rooms? I have a formal bedroom set that I've split - the dressers and nightstands are in my room and the four poster is in the guest room. It's not overwhelming that way.
Ask yourself if you'll be sad you passed on it. That usually answers these questions for me.
Oh, and when she prices the couch, maybe say, "I'll take both for $X" if you feel comfortable bargaining with her.
