We could not live without ours. My husband has his 'bachelor' reclining couches and then I went and bought an updated recliner that is not so hideous. I'll admit - I'm converted and think we will always have a big comfy recliner... although not quite as ugly as the bachelor furniture!
Old school, big, ugly recliners are nms, and will never have a place in my house, but we have seen some pretty stealth recliners that we would consider.
I love recliners! We have a La-Z-Boy couch and love seat which both have built in recliners. I can't imagine watching TV any other way, lol! The pps are right, they have come a long way. You can find some pretty nice stand alone recliners these days.
I don't have one because I can't get past how ugly they are (the overstuffed variety). But if I'm at someone's house and they have one, you better believe I'm the first person to claim that chair because they are so friggen comfortable. Of course I immediately want to curl up and take a nap in them...

I really don't like them or recliner couches. They are just too ugly for me to get past, plus I always think of old people when I see them (my grandparents bought them when they got older), but I know several of our friends have them in their house by choice. I've seen the lazyboy ones that don't look like recliners, but I think I'm more into large chaise-type couches to lounge on rather than individual chairs/recliners. My parents never had them, do you think it's hereditary that I don't like them?
Honestly..only on the internet are they evil death of hte decorating world! Everyone, grandma included has one where I live. It's normal. If I'm going to lay down and snuggle up and watch TV I'm not about to do it on an armless, feels like plywood side chair.
I have a recliner in Rubes' room and it's saved me many times. Our sofa also reclines.
They do have a time and a place. Not in a formal LR obviously but in the day to day hangout family room, they're great.
Overstuffed couches bother me. Overstuffed recliners do not for some reason.
My sister has a chair and a half that reclines and rocks..it's freakin' fabulous.

We have a giant, ugly, triple-reclining-section sectional. It's hideous and did I mention GIANT? But you know what? It's ridiculously comfy. I'd not give up on owning a recliner for ANYTHING.

Ugly.
But we have one. The absolute best thing for rocking babies, and also for letting kids of any age sleep a little upright when they have a cold.
We keep ours in Dd's room. She sleeps in it on the regular. We might get one for the basement rec room at some point but I doubt we would for the living room.
a little over 6 years ago i got an over sized, tufted button wing back recliner that i chose a nice upholstered fabric to coordinate with our living room. i like it. it looks good, imo. it isn't modern, leans heavily towards traditional, so our living room is fairly transitional with its presence.
we also just bought an updated club recliner for our bedroom. it is a rocking recliner, very comfy, leather and is there for the functional purpose of the 3 months we will have my DD with us in there after she is born (in less than 4 weeks now!). once she is moved into a crib in the kids room, it may move out into our family room and be replaced with a pretty slipper chair in patterned upholstery.
i do not like the typical recliners that men gravitate toward. but can attest to the fact that with a lot of shopping and price comparisons, you can find a good compromise so that the husband in the house can have a recliner w/o your sacrificing style/design.
We recently replaced DH's chair with a leather club chair. I looked at probably every recliner available in the U.S. but didn't find one that didn't scream "I'm a recliner" in DH's size. He's really tall which limits our options.

This is going to seem super weirdo, but I just don't see or want the need. Maybe this will change once we are free of this house and have more free time, but right now I don't sit anywhere long enough to warrant a super comfy chair.
Our family room is decorated with modern, somewhat-sleek furniture in jewel tones.
Then there is H's giant, plush, milk-chocolate brown recliner junking up the corner.
I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. HATE. But he loves it more than life and spends hours a day sitting in it working and relaxing. I consider it one of our major marital compromises, LOL.
I'll say necessary evil, but the fact is I love my ugly recliner.
Could I have dropped some serious money and gotten a pretty stealth recliner? I suppose. But instead I found a cheap but SUPER comfy recliner, shoved it in my nursery and then fell in love.
I slept in that chair for 2 weeks before I actually popped this kid out because it's the only place I could get comfortable. When I'm snuggled into that thing with shorti snuggled into me for a feeding in the wee hours I know it was totally worth throwing my "vision" for my nursery chair out the window.
The uglier the more comfortable so they will never enter my home. Because if I'm gonna bother it should be super comfy but super comfy is way too ugly. So an armchair & ottoman will have to do. The only people I know with one are my in-laws.

I don't like overstuffed furniture, and most recliners I see for sale are. Though even not overstuffed, I think I'd be annoyed at the space such a thing would take up. I can always lay down on the couch.
My parents have a recliner that I rather like the look of. But they've had it for a million years and I've never seen another one like it. If I saw one like it at a second hand store, I'd probably buy it.
