Some of the artwork in the house reminded me of that scene in the British version of Death at a Funeral when the son looks around his dad's study and realized Peter Dinklage's claims about a relationship are probably true.
I like the skylight and the butlers pantry, but it does seem to spread out to be able to really work well. But I struggle with that because if we were to move close enough to host our family get togethers, we'd need lots of kitchen workspace, but the other 360 days out of the year I'd be wasting a lot of energy walking back and forth across it.

I struggle with the same thing. Our rental house kitchen was a tiny galley but it was very well laid out and had an amazing amount of storage. When it was just me cooking dinner, it was amazing because everything was super close together. I could unload the dishwasher without ever moving my feet.
But, god forbid there was a birthday party, a holiday, I had friends over, etc, let alone the kids just wanting to help. Then it was a disaster.
That is part of why I think my dream kitchen has a long side against a wall with a sink, stove, etc, and a l island across from it, so that I can put kids and helpers on the opposite side of the island and get them out of the way of the main workspace, but still have the main workspace be sort of galley-sized. I will probably never be lucky/rich enough to get to do a kitchen from scratch, but I can dream.
