Practically speaking, I prefer roller or roman shades, because I get migraines with light sensitivity and it helps to be able to *completely* block out light. Slat blinds don't do that.
Visually speaking, slat blinds are nicer looking than roller or roman shades, so that's what I voted for.
I like curtains. In my LR, I have sheer panels which cover the windows and those are flanked by silk panels...I pretty much have the same kind of window treatment in most of my rooms. Second to that, I like roman shades, but they get pricey for me because I'm so picky when it comes to fabric.
I feel like the current standard of "nice" window treatments is wood/faux wood blinds. It used to be mini blinds so wood blinds was an easy transition.
Personally I don't like slatted blinds because of the harsh shadows they create in the space and the fact that they don't block out the light completely. The slates and shadows they make remind me of prison bars especially when they are vertical in a patio door. I would much rather have the softened diffused light of a roman shade or roller shade. The previous owner had cellular shades which are OK but they were top down bottom up so there are extra long cords hanging everywhere so we wind the cords up around the closed shade and never use them. Plus they have stains from ladybugs/japanese beetles/box elder bugs crawling into the cells and getting squished in them when they are raised. Ewww!
For our house as we put in new windows we're having fabric roman and natural fiber woven shades with a few windows also having curtains. I love the layered look of shades + curtains but it's costly and we can't easily put curtains in some locations like over the kitchen sink, over the tub, or in tight areas where they would get in the way. The nice thing about roman shades are you don't have the added wand or cords like you do slate blinds which gives you a nice clean look. They are either up or down. We don't need them for privacy so they are just light control for us. We can also pick whatever lining is needed in the space. Room darkening, light filtering, or no lining. That way adjoining rooms can have the same/similar looking blinds but have different light filtering options (ie. room darkening for movie watching in the LR and only light filtering in the DR). We're going fairly neutral with our roman shades and having more fun with the curtain patterns/colors because they are easier to replace when we want to change the decor.
Sorry for the rambling but that is my thought process. Window treatments are expensive so you want to love them because you're going to have them for a very long time!

I didn't vote. I prefer roman shades, but I put faux wood blinds in my house. I knew that I would likely be changing much of the furniture over the next 5 years, so it didn't make sense to pick fabric that might not match whatever comes next. We can still put up curtains over the blinds, and have the windows look uniform from the outside. They weren't horribly expensive, so we could replace them in the future if we really wanted to.

Another fan of Roman shades, be it the matchstick or fabric kind. I think they look really sharp layered with drapes for a finished look. I love matchstick blinds for natural fiber and texture they bring to a room. The nicer quality lined ones (for privacy and darkness) are the way to go, but can be pricey. I also have made several fabric Roman shades myself (it's easier than you might imagine) in neutral fabrics that will go with whatever other treatments I layer in.
