there is a local neighborhood 10K next weekend that I want to run (5/19). its a fundraiser for local schools and a neighborhood tradition and I just want to run it. I'm also running a half one week after that (5/26).
the half will likely not be a PR, but I want to put in a good, hard effort.
would it be totally nuts to go for a 10K PR next weekend if I want to run a solid half? will running a hard 10K take away from my half efforts? should I just do the 10K as a tempo? skip it entirely and do a long run (10ish) instead next weekend? WWHFD?
mitigating factor that might sway you towards skipping the 10K and getting another long run in: I did 13 this weekend for my longest run and it was not pretty and I was kind of a mess after. 12 miler the week before was fine. glorious even. so I'm not sure what went wrong with the 13, but it's kind of shaken my confidence.
Saturday was warm and Sunday was windy if you are looking for some excuses.
I would race the 10k, maybe doing a mile or two before or after. I think you should be fully recovered from the 10k after a couple days, and a race is great speed work (hell, it is often my only speed work)
I did a 5 miler the week before my half. I wouldn't call the 5 miler balls-out, but it was a solid effort, faster than a tempo run. I don't think it had any effect on my half.

I'd do both.
Was your long run on Saturday? It was crazy humid and gross outside. I was supposed to run 8 miles, but I bailed after 7, because I just couldn't do it. The first few humid days of the year are always really tough.

I was just going to ask if it was on Saturday. I wore pants for the first time in 10 days on Saturday (my one casual skirt was dirty), and I was MISERABLE just standing outside. Yesterday, however, was amazing.
I have no advice, but if your 13 was Saturday, then I am proud of you for just not dying.

Nope. I did it on Sunday, so I can't use the humidity as my excuse. Saturday was the plan but I rescheduled last minute. I'm generally not a fan of Sunday AM runs but I chose wind over humidity this weekend. I guess it just wasn't my day (also I didn't really eat a good dinner the night before. mostly just grazing after a late lunch). it would have been nice to finish with a solid long run, but c'est la vie.
thanks for all the feedback everyone. I'll do them both and run them both hard.

I'm not exactly sane when it comes to running back to back races/weekends, but I think it's completely do-able to race a 10K and then a half the week after. I PR'ed my 10k last weekend (and ran a 5k and half last weekend also) and ran my heart out at my half yesterday - very close to a PR.
