We have a rather large underground bees nest next to our front entrance. Approx 6' x 8'. Is this best left to professionals to deal with or is there something we can do to try and treat ourselves?

That sounds huge.
A friend realized bees made a hive in her wall, getting in behind a layer of siding. They originally weren't going to worry about it, until they realized they were hearing them from inside. When they called a beekeeper, he estimated it was the size of most of the rock wall they have on the interior, and they had thousands in there. They're going to have to tent the room and rip out the wall to get them out. The beekeeper sounded excited about rehoming them.
We have ground bees. They're really hard to get rid of, but they're also, in general, very passive. We have lived with them every year since we bought our house, so four years now. In all that time, my H has only been stung once, and I have never been stung. If you can't leave them alone, try letting the grass or other vegetation grow up really tall, that seems to discourage them. Or call a beekeeper. I hate the thought of killing more bees since they're dying and no one knows why, which is why we have left them alone.
