None of my rabbits ever really chewed on furniture. Cords - yes. You can get special cord covers which help - and rabbits should always be supervised when out of their cage anyway. They're fragile little creatures!
There are lots of chew toys/games/mazes/tunnels/etc that you can buy for bunnies to keep him/her occupied and prevent chewing.
In my experience, male bunnies stink more (and sometimes spray) and female bunnies can be crankier. If you get a young bunny and play with him/her and cuddle/hold the bunny they will grow up to be fun loving happy big bunnies!
Rabbits are great pets - especially if you have kids. I had my first when I was 5 and we plan on getting one for Emily when she's 5ish. They're a great way to help kids learn responsibility! (and rabbits they're cute and cuddly! BONUS!)
I've never had a big problem it's chewing, but my place is pretty well bunny proofed. I have one cord exposed that has a cord protector on it.
I haven't heard anything about specific breeds being better as pets. I had a mini lop that was wonderful and I have two holland lops now. They aren't as cuddly, but they've been pretty great too. I adopted all three from a rescue. If we gt any more in the future wee'll go that way too.
Litter training is really easy. They're naturally tidy animals and pick a spot to go in. You just put the litter box in that spot and that's all it took for all three of mine.
The house rabbit society has a ton of great info on it. I would start there to see if they are the right pet for you. Let me know if you have any other questions. They really are great pets.
We had a bunny when I was a kid and I loved it - I put him on a leash an let him hop around outside.
A little on the smelly side, but not bad if you stay on top of it
We also acquired a large white rabbit when we first bought our house - a rescue from an animal testing lab with only one ear. He was great, but required a lot of brushing and would thump around very loudly at night
We don't have a rabbit but our neighbors do and they have a big pen that they put the bunny in in the backyard on nice days (it lives inside the rest of the time). We joke that when he is out there bunny is on vacation. They have a ball in there, a little ramp to a platform for him to go up and down, a shady side and a sunny side. He plays with his ball, runs around like crazy and seems to have a really good time. Thier kids will come out and sit next to the cage and talk the bun. It is so cute.
Bunnies shouldn't smell. They're naturally clean animals. I've never had a problem with that. Mine are spayed though and the male was neutered so maybe that's whyy and that's wha tthe hour rabiit society recommends so if they aren't already spayed or neutered i would have it done. I also clean they're litter boxes and cages every other day. Their urine can be kind of strong smelling, but the right litter should take care of that.

We have bunnies that the girls raise for 4-H, but they aren't roam-the-house bunnies. They live in hutches and cages. We do set up a large caged area in the grass for them to run around and play in when the weather is nice. Rabbits love to play with toys, and they need things to chew on constantly. My friend has a house bunny and it is litter trained. Chewing on cords is a problem, but like pp said, there are things you can put over the cords. We love our bunnies! We had a Mini Lop named Bob, he was awesome and had the big floppy ears. Right now we have a Netherland Dwarf and some kind of mutt bunny.

^^^ this!!
I had two male bunnies - unfixed. Which is why they were a little stinky. The poo did not smell unless they were sick/had diarrhea. Which was...once. Maybe.

I lovelovelovelove having bunnies as pets! They're so warm and loving, and they have so much personality.
I would check out the House Rabbit Society's homepage on how to pick the right kind of rabbit for you (breeds don't have specific personalities) and how to bunnyproof your house, because yes, they chew. But they're intelligent, curious, social, and just wonderful to have around.
