We took DS on his first real hiking trip today. Went about 2.5 miles in and back out right next to a reservoir with amazing lake and moutain views on all sides. It was breathtaking and DS was an amazing little trooper. I took a ton of picture while we were back there and there were some that were just fantastic that I couldn't wait to download, post to FB, send to grandparents, etc. I just loaded the memory card into my computer and every fucking picture that I took is gone. GONE! No trace of it at all on the camera itself or the card. About 50 of them so I know I didn't just accidentally hit delete.
I can't view them on the camera anymore either. Completely missing. The 10 pictures I took when we stopped for lunch on the drive there are still visible but all the hike pics are just gone.
ETA: At least this gem from our lunch break, before the hike, survived. Not enough to make up for all the others though.
Aw, I'm sorry. It might be worth talking to a data recovery place to see if they can find them on there. And definitely get a new memory card before the next time you need to take pictures.
Did you put them into memory by accident instead of onto the card? How many pictures does your camera hold without the sd card? It could be that if you flip through it without the card in, they might be there. In that case, just download them onto the card.
I can't read, ignore me. I didn't see where you said "the camera itself"
My dad somehow recovered some when he accidentally deleted a ton. I wish I knew how, but he's out of town right now, so I can't ask. he found out by googling and I think he downloaded some software.

I would cry. The one you did get of him in the water is sooo cute though!
If it makes you feel any better I dropped my camera in the river while we were on a fishing trip not too long ago, and then, of course, H catches a gigantic fish.
