My dishwasher gets them clean either way. What drives me nuts is my H putting dishes in there without rinsing them. Our dishwasher gets disgusting because of this, I have been telling him the entire time that we have been here (5 years) to rinse his fucking dishes and today I am about to run it and find knives and plates with peanut butter all over them. And then he says I am nagging if I tell him to stop doing that. It is so freaking lazy that he won't take two fucking seconds to rinse his dishes.

Some fancy combination. All eating surfaces up except for knives, which point down so that I can put them away without worrying about sharp stuff. Or, in houses with dogs that get all up in your business whilst loading, so you don't have to worry about a cut doggy tongue.
Eating surface down. Don't over load the silverware and make sure the spoons don't nest. Touch the handles only when taking it out. Knives which aren't table knives/butter are hand washed. Who doesn't wash their hands before unloading? Ewww.
I said eating surface down so when you unload the dishwasher you aren't touching all up on the part of the spoon someone will put in their mouth, you know?

Lol. We JUST had this discussion in our house too. I say eating surface up, but wife works at a restaurant and says eating surface down. We usually end up with a combo.
Our basket has a slotted roof for the utensils, we wouldn't be able to put them down.
And, there is handle space under the eating surface, so I grab the handle like 1/2" from the eating surface while unloading.
GE has apparently decided this for me. But even before the advent of slotted silverware racks, I was eating surface up/knives down. I simply grab below the eating surfaces so I don't touch them with my grubby little fingers. Besides, if I do touch them, it's extra bacteria and germs for my immune system to fight so, eh, I'm keeping us healthy.
