Finally able to stop staring at her long enough to hop on the real computer to share a birth story.
The short version is that minivic101 arrived at 6:13 on May 11, weighing in at 8 pounds 6 ounces and 20.5 inches long. We are absolutely in love with her.
Long version:
I had my membranes swept at my appointment on the 8th. My midwife sent me home saying that if she was ready, then I'd be in labor soon, if not then we'd try again next week. I had random contractions Wednesday night and all day on Thursday, but mostly they just felt like braxton hicks. Friday I went into work with painless contractions 8-10 minutes apart - I had some loose ends to tie up and wanted to say goodbye to my students. I ended up coming home at one - it was either leave willingly or have my friends strap me in the car and drive me away.
I made DH go for a couple of walks with me Friday afternoon - I think we ended up going about 6 miles. While we were walking contractions picked up, but when we stopped, so did they. I spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on my exercise ball willing something to happen. I even seduced my poor husband at some point Friday evening too. I went to bed around 9 with relatively painless contractions 8-10 minutes apart. By 11 they were starting to hurt, at 12 they were 2-3 minutes apart and hurt! I woke DH up, told him it was time to go - which of course meant that he jumped in the shower while I waited. Got to the hospital at 1:00 (DH was in such a hurry to get me to L&D that he left me in the parking lot while I was bent over having a contraction) - was told that I was dehydrated and not in labor until the MD on call checked and I was 4 cm, I was admitted and given IV fluids. I'd planned on a med free birth, but wimped out and got the drugs. Probably a good thing because by the time the hour was over for the fluids, I'd gone from 4 cm to 8 cm. They put in the epidural, broke my water and left us to wait, saying we'd be there for a while.
4 hours later, after an hour and 15 minutes of pushing, minivic was born. Little stinker was Left Occiput Transverse - we had her turned for a bit, but she turned back on her way down. I think she ended up somewhere between that and sunny side up when she finally came out.
The scary part came after she was born. Her placenta didn't detach, so I spent the next 45 minutes with the MD's man hands up inside scraping around trying to get it to release after he pulled so hard that he broke the cord. If he hadn't gotten it when he did, we were heading for the OR. I can't imagine that part without the epidural.
We were released from the hospital on Monday afternoon. But since the pedi was concerned that she'd lost almost a pound, he wanted me to give her formula and come back for a weight check on Tuesday. We went from the hospital to the lactation consultant at my midwife's office where she told me to feed her every 1.5 hours. At Tuesday's weight check she'd gone from 7 pounds 9 ounces to 7 pounds 11 ounces. We went back again yesterday and she's tipping the scales at 8 pounds 2 ounces.
We are absolutely in love. I'm working on getting her newborn pictures done myself a little at a time since my photog officially backed out. But here's one for you:
