Has anyone ever notice that prom fashion by and large is the same as it was in the 90s? I noticed this about 8yrs ago and then again just yesterday as we saw kids downtown getting prom photos taken. The hair and dresses are THE SAME as they were when I first went to prom in 1992! The dress I wore then was also 3 yrs old, so the same as they were in 1989 at least. I noticed this 8 yrs ago too, so it isn't like the style came back as retro or ironic.
Wedding fashion has changed, home fashion has changed, so what is the deal with prom?
I notice there are a few girls wearing more modern dresses, but most of them look just like I did in '92. What gives?
I didn't go to prom, but I can tell you that 90% of the stuff the girls are wearing to prom now is no where near the same as it was when I was in high school.
I noticed where we lived in CA that for the most part the girls chose pretty traditional formal gowns, although there are always colors/fabrics/details that kind of date a dress.
It seemed to vary from year to year and by school as to whether the prevailing style was short or long. ..or if the prevailing style was 'hooker'. lol
I chaperoned a small town MN prom a few weeks ago- the majority of the dresses were at least $350! The styles were pretty red carpet, except for the girl who wore a camo gown with pickups.
Yes, for the most part dresses are about the same from my time too (97). The one exception is H's cousin's prom seemed to be less formal than I am used to.
I feel like right after my prom (in 2002), there was a movement towards really short dresses at prom. But that seems to have reversed and the proms that I have seen (in the paper, when we are out to dinner) look more similar to what my friends and I wore to prom.
I think the mentality of formal for teenagers hasn't changed much. Since the designers basically cater to the parents who are buying the dresses, there are only so many shapes and styles a long formal dress can do.
The trend has also changed from long to short to long again
