And, like pixie said, if the sirens go off within however many minutes (or an hour) of school releasing the students will be kept there until the danger is passed.
This happened to me many times growing up.
There was one time in high school school had just let out and we were all outside getting in our cars and leaving. The tornado siren went off and we all just abandoned the cars and took off running to get inside the school again. That one came close to hitting the school, and took out a trailer near the school and damaged the football field. ::shudder:: I hate tornadoes.

I grew up in tornado alley. My HS had a basement, that was just the lowest level, but it was beneath ground. We didn't go down there for tornado sirens, I don't think we would have all fit. We just went into the interior hallways.
In grade school and middle school - same thing. Interior hallways.
In OKC. The devastation is unreal. We've been in shelters all day. My sister in law's house was leveled in yesterday's storms and now this today. Prayers for all Oklahomans.

We dont have a tv in our shelter but we are listening to the radio and they are reading off the kids names that they have rescued so that their parents can come pick them up at another location. They are not letting parents by the school.
We are safe for now. Two different systems headed my way now. One should hit around 5 and another one a couple of hours later. I watched the Moore tornado live on TV. It is absolutely terrifying. Moore was completely wiped out before on May 3, 1999.
I am heartbroken. Sent from my Motorola Electrify using ProBoards

I hate this time of year around here. Our county is under a tornado watch until later tonight and several have already touched down west of us. It's amazing there haven't been more reports of injuries from OK. I just pray it stays that way.

I'm keeping all you in the area in my thoughts! I just turned on the news and am horrified by the scene. 8-12 minutes warning!? I can't believe the stress everyone was under.

This is terrifying. I hope everyone there is safe and your families are safe. And I hope all the kids in that school(s?) get accounted for. This is just awful.
