Can any one recommend a decent quality, but affordable treadmill brand?
It doesn't have to fold up or anything- it will be in my basement. I just don't want to cheap out and end up with a dead motor or issues with the belt too quickly.
Is buying of Craigslist a good idea? I feel like most people sell them after years of being used only as a clothes rack :-)
I had great luck buying on Craiglist. I searched for about a month before I found a decent brand for reasonable $. I stayed away from the brands you can buy at discount stores for a few hundred new. I had trouble finding good treadmill reviews online, but I looked at brands that retailed for probably $1-$3K. Runner's World website had pretty good reviews.
I ended up with an older Vision treadmill, and got a steal at $125. While it doesn't have any pre-loaded programs or music syncing, it has the important speed & incline functions & seems like it will run forever. I definitely think it's worth it to patiently search ads because people will get rid of really nice, functional treadmills if they don't use them. GL!
We have a Proform 600 that we bought from Sports Authority. We looked at a lot of treadmills on CL, but none of them went up to 12, which was Mr. GT's requirement. If you do go the CL route I would test a few out at a local sporting goods store so you know which ones to avoid.
We have a Nordic Track. They don't make the model I have anymore, but I love it. It cost us about $1,100 after delivery/set up feeds, etc. They have great customer service, IMO.

I bought a Horizon treadmill from Amazon a few months ago. It got good reviews and was priced well - $600. Amazon includes delivery but we had to set it up ourselves, which was actually really easy to do with 2 people. I run outdoors most of the time, so I don't put a ton of mileage on it, but it has about 200 miles on it so far and I'm still happy with it.
I initially set out to buy used on Craigslist as well, but I was really overwhelmed and finally decided that for ~ $200 more, I could buy new and have the warranty.
