Yes! Years and years and lightyears ago, when I was just a little kid. As I recall, it was a good experience for the family.
Honestly, though, if I were to go camping in the Adirondacks today, I'd go to www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24488.html. It's run by the State, and very well maintained. You can rent canoes and kayaks, and there are bathrooms close to all the sites. There's only one site with showers, but you can drive up to them and park there, and the stalls all have separate changing areas with benches, making it very user-friendly. I spent a lot of time camping/living there, while my parents built their house about a mile down the road.
ETA: And, best of all, you can usually get a spot that's at least a little secluded from others around you.
I haven't stayed there but I will be going to stay at the olde forge camp ground by enchanted forest. My cousins went last year and loved it and we are going with them this year, in June to just camp and again in July to go to enchanted forest. It's super cheap and lots to do.
