Am the only one still watching 19 kids and counting? I am just watching the episode from yesterday, and it has so many annoying elements.
First, they do a gender reveal for Josh & Anna's third baby in church. It just seemed obnoxious to me.
Secondly, Josh and Jim-Bob are doing a fitness challenge which I actually think is great. They are working on eating better, exercising, etc.
But they are doing this relay race thing involving the whole family, and I am irrationally annoyed that one of the challenges for the girls is to change a diaper on a baby doll. Meanwhile the boys get to do more fun "boy" activities like racing and stuff.
Josh & Anna & kids are moving to Washington DC to accept a job offer. I don't know what the offer is or what he'll be doing. I only saw the last few minutes of the show.

I believe he's been offered a job with the Heritage Foundation. Or a similar conservative group. Which seems way outside his realm of capabilities, but I guess they want his name and brand.
yeah he was basically hired for name recognition. The family did a lot of campaigning for Santorum and I know Josh and Anna were in D.C. for the march for life or whatever that even was a couple of months ago. They are as anti-abortion as they come.
I also disagree with many things about the Duggars but can't quit the show. I think partly because I went to college just down the road from them in Northwest Arkansas. I'm always so freaking jealous when they go to Shake's for frozen custard. We had one in KC but it closed They had the best pumpkin custard

The oldest son of the Duggar family could be joining the conservative Family Research Council in a senior executive position, according to three sources familiar with the organization.
This is weird, what experience and skills does he have to be in a senior position? I guess, as others have said, they want him for his popularity...
Regarding the games for the little girls, sadly this doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that they haven't married some of the older girls. They are OLD for their standars and won't be able to have as many babies, which is the horror in their community.
Oh good people who have been watching - can someone tell me where the other (single) son went? It seemed like boot camp but not necessarily US military?
It was very vague.
I have not been keeping up with my Dvr and am confused lol.

How old are their oldest daughters?
I'm also surprised that more of them, both the boys and the girls, aren't married off by now and yet Josh is already married and working on #3.

he went to the A.L.E.R.T. Academy. It is basically a Gothard/ATI bootcamp for boys. They made it sound like he willingly went there of his own accord, but in the past, the Duggars sent Josh there when he was being disobedient and they've sent their girls to the girl Gothard/ATI camp when they were being "willful".

I think they are all between 19 and 23 so they are totally old maids in their eyes
I believe that I read somewhere that the problem is that in their religion girls can't marry down, so they're having trouble finding boys that are more well off than them. With guys there isn't a problem in marrying down and that's why Josh could marry Anna.

I am not surprised
1) the older girls do a good amount of the child rearing
2) the Duggars are basically quiverful/ATI "royalty". Many families in that group are pretty poor as they have tons of kids and no reality show income to support them! So any boy that wants to court the Duggar daughters will need to be of some means. He will at least need to have a good job/run his own business before approaching Jim Bob about marrying one of them.
3) they are isolated and opportunities to meet boys are few and far between.

oh interesting! Hmm. I didn't know their kids could be anything but perfect lol.

Very interesting. How do you know all of this? Do we have a Duggar insider in our midst?
Meh, maybe changing a pretend diaper is fun for the girls. Plenty of girls rather not race around judging from watching kids at my girls school on the playground. My DD1 is almost 9, my DD2 is 6 & I just had a baby...they fight over who gets to do chores for the baby. They love having a baby in the house so much & DD1 talks about how she can't wait to have her own. I loved being a big sister too. I still managed to grow up to be an Architect and enjoy having my own babies. I guess I'm just not so quick to say what other people rather be doing.

Fundie Friday on CEP! Some of the posters lurk on the Free Jinger site where you can find lots of good info
basically they've shipped off kids that got into trouble (which can be things as simple as being disobedient, willful, or questioning the parents or their beliefs) to the camps for "reprogramming" and it seems to have worked. I know Josh and Jinger got sent away at some point in their teens. Jana went to one of the camps as a counselor in a recent season and they mentioned she'd been there as a camper before too. And then this recent son going to A.L.E.R.T. Academy.
I don't think it's that they "can't" marry down, it's that the Duggars don't want them to. Jim Bob wants his daughters taken care of at the same level he has, which requires some means.
I thought we'd have a Duggar/Bates wedding by now but I kind of wonder about that now. The Bates encourage all their kids to go to college, something the Duggars do not do (they do fake college, CLEP classes essentially, the kids can't go to school alone, everything has to be done at home or out in the community in pairs).
The Bates seem ever so slightly more liberal, or at least more comfortable with the outside world.

I'm glad to see someone else is as obsessed as I am! I really thought that one of the Bates/Duggars would be married by now as well. So even if they court one of the girls and get married, wouldn't going out in the community be with her spouse?
I'm also really surprised to see Josh and Anna moving away. I don't think that will last very long. Plus, where will they live in DC that can hold 10+ kids?

Where did you read this?
I am skeptical because the Duggars are a part of ATI/Gothard's ministry and my husband's family grew up in the same group and knew the Duggarss. They are extreme, but still follow the Bible. I haven't personally heard anything about not marrying "down". Maybe the girls don't want to, but that is a separate issue from religious rulings. I might be wrong, too, because my in-laws have been out for several years.
Pugs is right about ALERT academy though. 2 of my brother-in-laws were sent there, and my husband visited. It's essentially an indoctrination camp where they attempt to shape you up. I don't think anyone willfully chooses to go there, especially if they are already being rebellious. That place is hell even for good Christians who genuinely want to live good lives.
Honestly I don't remember but I think that at the Free Jinger site that Pugz mentioned.
You're right about what you said and possibly I didn't understand very well the concept and I thought it was a religious precept. What you say makes sense, this rule could very well be a personal choice of the Duggars.

I agree with this. I like the Bates, but probably because they seem a little more grounded. Although, Mr. Bates would probably scare me. lol. I can't remember how old the Bates kids are, but it seemed like their sons weren't as old as the Duggar daughters.
I just feel bad for the girls. I can't imagine growing up and not being encouraged to pursue my dreams, or even be allowed to dream. If someone wants to be a mom and housewife, that is totally awesome. But to have that thrust upon you sounds stifling and really upsetting. My parents were extremely conservative and emphasized the woman's place was at home with her children once they arrived, but we were still encouraged to go to college and be prepared to support ourselves if prince charming didn't waltz in. I knew I could be a doctor, or singer, or architect, or whatever I wanted! I wish their kids at least had the option to choose, even if they still chose the big family life.
I agree, it is really sad to me I didn't read the Duggars first book but I read the second one. It was very interesting and gave some insight into how they are raising their kids. For the boys, college isn't really important to them and they won't pay for it. They want them to go out and get a job. But really they want them to work for themselves and be self-sufficient. I think a lot of that is that they don't want them in a traditional workplace where they will be influenced by others. So by starting their own business, they can avoid that.
For the girls they do offer some financial support as far as paying for some college "classes" (again it's mostly CLEP stuff, not an actual degree). Jill is pursing midwifery and Jana is becoming a doula but really I don't think Jana had much interest, but Jill couldn't go out and pursue it on her own, another sibling had to be with her. It's the same as when John David was a volunteer firefighter, a couple of his sisters had to go with him since he couldn't be alone. I don't think Jill will have any kind of real nursing degree. Mostly just training through apprenticeship although she does do a lot of studying, but I don't believe it's any kind of accredited program.
They do expect that all their daughters will be SAHWs/SAHMs
I hadn't watched for a few years, but picked it up again this season. I'm totally invested in Josh and Jim Bob's weight loss/fitness challenge.
Haven't yet watched the latest episode, but I'm constantly put off by the gendered elements to what the family does. It's how they are, so I let it go. I have a feeling at least one of the girls will end up living a very different life than how they're being brought up. Also, and this may get me flamed, I get a gay vibe from one of the boys (don't remember who). Yes, I know sexuality cannot be detected by another person, especially someone who doesn't even know the kid, but he really reminds me of the gay male friends I had in high school.
And I assume it's already been discussed, but why are we supposed to care about "cousin Amy"? She annoys the hell out of me.
Edit: I hadn't finished the thread when I posted. Wow, lots of information I had no clue about! Thanks, pugz!
