I have researched this fairly heavily in the last week!
Frontline Plus has tick control. However, it reportedly does not control tick's as well as K9 Advantix. But you can't use K9 Advantix if you have cat's around (which also makes you wonder a little bit if it's really all that safe for dogs). We opted to go with Frontline Plus and see how it does. If we find too many ticks, we'll switch.
There were a few other options, but it was really down between these two the more I looked into it.
We used to use Frontline but switched to K9 Advantix after finding multiple ticks on our dog. Since we've been using K9 Advantix, we haven't found any ticks. Personally, I like putting the product down multiple spots on our dogs back- I started doing it with Frontline b/c she has short hair and would shake off half the product when I only put it in one spot. I like the added mosquito protection with K9 Advantix b/c the park next door gets pretty bad in the summer.
Our vet actually recommended Vectra 3D, we've been using it for several years and have been really happy with it. It supposedly also repels mosquitoes, which can help prevent heartworm. We of course also give a heartworm prevention medication, but I figure it can't hurt.
We've always lived in areas that are prone to ticks, too - our last yard backed up to a prairie preserve, and our current yard has lots of huge, old trees in it. Ain't no bugs on our dogs!
My vet has told me that he has seen many adverse reactions to K-9 Advantix. He recommended that we stay with the frontline. He said that the occasional tick with Frontline was less risk than the other product.
