Nanny calls at noon -- Marcus is randomly crying inconsolably, grabbing at his penis, and his penis is swollen. I call the doc, they have a 1:30 appointment, so I RUSH home and tell Nanny to bring him in (doc is a 2min walk from our apt).
I miss the appointment but they completely dismiss everything. "He's fine," they say. No torsion, no swelling because "I don't know what his penis normally looks like," he's fine. (PS it was *obviously* swollen. I wanted to say "Yes, meet my son with the magnum infant penis.")
I talk to the doctor, come home, and Marc's napping. He wakes up at 3:15 SCREAMING, is inconsolable, and again, his penis is swollen. He pees just a little bit after all this so I think UTI. I call the doctors', make them listen to the kid scream-cry, and bring him back in. I literally picked him up as he was, no socks/shoes, and carried him over so they could see him like this. Doctor says "Oh okay, well let's cath him." Which is a fucking production b/c he's 1 years old and has a hurt penis. And I could see it was also red at the tip. Marc is crying, sobbing, I had to help hold him, it was awful. Finally they get it in and he fills the pee container b/c he hadn't wanted to go.
No UTI but his foreskin is infected. Doctor says they'll prescribe antibiotics but he recommends circumcision, too. (Which like....obviously we'll do if medically necessary but we didn't circ for a reason, and Marc just had a virus so his immune system was down so I guess I wouldn't jump to circ'ing for one infection). Calls in antibiotics.
Well the pharmacy was out so they said they called the other close by and it would be ready in 20 minutes. Fuckers fucking faxed it over. I get to the other pharmacy and talk to the ONLY competent person I've spoken to all day. The pharmacist hadn't gotten the prescription but gets it, rolls her eyes at the fax, fills it immediately. And it isn't generic so she even checked the cost for me first. Gives me what to look for, was so kind, and I cried walking out of CVS.
Now Jake is feeding them, Marc is diaperless walking around in an unsnapped romper, and I'm fucking spent.
Oh and a funny thing was, I come home and give Marc his antibiotics. And he's been getting attention since, what, 11? So Gabriel comes running over and opens his mouth so he can have some, too! Lol. We filled a syringe dropper with water and gave it to him. He was quite the happy boy

Poor guy did they say what might have caused the infection? I'm surprised the doc recommended circumcision..that seems kinda extreme and I hope it doesn't come to that for his sake!

He has a tight foreskin and sometimes it happens. I think it's like girls and utis, the biology makes them more susceptible. I'm hoping it's something he grows out of once the foreskin detaches some (between 3 and 5 i think).
I know. We're going to get a second opinion if something like this happens again, from a urologist. I also thought it was extreme for a one time thing.

Oh, no. I'm so sorry. Watching them get catheterized is the worst. My daughter had a UTI at a little over a year. It was awful. I hope that this is a one time thing and you won't have to worry about surgery.
Dude, next time a doctor second guesses your ability to eyeball your sons issues, remind him that you have another one at home for reference, which doubles your credibility.
