Hi everyone, I'm new here. We just moved to our first house and we're in the process ofbuying EVERYTHING we need. Right now I'm looking for a dinnerware set, but there are so many options! Any recommendations? I want to take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend savings!

I love my blue and white Brasserie dinnerware from William Sonoma - you can buy it at their outlets. It's heavy enough to be durable and classic looking.
I highly recommend Crate and Barrel. I have white dinnerware they don't make anymore but the point is that after 6 years we have never broken a dish....and I'm hard on dishes!
Definitely shop around for the best prices...many stores carry the same brands and the prices can be all over the place.
A lot of people like Corelle, and it is durable, but we don't like the way it feels. It is just personal preference. We would rather use a nice stoneware. We seem to have a knack for picking patterns that are discontinued shortly after (lol), but if you choose something that will mix and match with other dishes later, like plain white or something that has been around forever, then you can add later when you want more place settings or need replacements.

Thanks! Yes, we definitely want to buy these "in person" instead of ordering online, so we can get a feel of how heavy they are the real dimensions.

I love our stoneware. Like PP said, it's personal preference. It feels more substantial and heavier, which some people hate. We have Pfaltsgraff brand.
When I was younger, my family used Corelle, and I can attest that that stuff holds up well!

When we got married 10 years ago, we got pottery barn's Emma dishes and bought a few more through the years. They suck. Almost every piece is chipped. The reviews from them all say the same thing. We're buying new dishes for our anniversary and have chosen the square white plates from Crate and Barrell. The reviews are a lot better. We're excited to go get them!
I have Racheal Ray in the Curly Cue pattern. It's a bit thicker than Corelle but about as sturdy and thin. I've had it two years and only bowl has chipped (Thanks to E. students who can't pack a dishwasher decently at all). It's also super affordable.
I love Corelle for everyday but I just wanted set I could dress up or down (I have don't have space for China) and I just don't like the way Corelle looks "dressed up."
I had a set of stoneware when we first got married (Waeachtersbach so it should've been decent) and I hated it. So heavy, didn't pack in the dishwasher easily, didn't microwave well at all, cracked down the middle and chipped like crazy. Never again. I know other people love it, but for my busy everyday life..it didn't do it for me.
Most of my friends have the basic C*B stuff in white and it's great too.
My sister has Fiestaware and loves it. It's stoneware so she says it does crack easier than she likes but it's affordable with a Macy's coupon and the whole point is mix and match so you never have to worry about discontinued.
We registered for Lenox Butler's Pantry stuff when we got married and weren't happy with it at all. It chipped, cracked and crazed. We still have it because most of it never actually broke, but we don't use it. I ordered Churchill Blue Willow that I love and use everyday, but it's very taste-specific.
Same here. I love it. It's especially nice because you can just continually buy more as you need it. Originally I only had service for 4. That's all I needed. Now I think I have service for 8-10 plus different pieces (large plates, salad plates, dessert plates, large mugs, small mugs, etc).

Personally, I like porcelain instead of ceramic or stoneware/earthenware. It's much more durable. It's also more expensive, though. I had stoneware dishes before DH and I got married, and they chipped so easily.
DH and I have porcelain dishes from Crate and Barrel (Kita) as our everyday dishes, and we love them.
