I was wondering the same thing. My doctor told me earlier this week that the lactation consultant at my hospital can measure me and they have nursing bras right there they provide to the patients. I had no idea. Might be worth checking if your hospital offers this.
It is fug as all get out, but SOOOO comfy and great for the first few weeks. Basically is just like a sports bra but more comfy. I have no idea about the underwire thing, I think I started wearing one with underwire around 4 or 6 weeks? Until then, it was this bra or nursing tanks 100% of the time.
I used the Bravado Original nursing bra as my starter nursing bra and waited until after my milk was in to buy more/different bravado bras. I didn't use underwire.
I preferred to wear nursing tanks in the hospital (even with giant boobs - a G-cup). I would suggest having 2 of something on hand - whether nursing tanks, bras, or sleep bras. Milk and/or spitup can make them smell bad much more quickly than normal bras. The benefit of nursing tanks is that they don't get uncomfortable when your boobs get bigger when your milk comes in.
Wait until your milk regulates to buy real nursing bras. That can be anywhere from a week to a month, depending on the person. If possible, get fitted between feedings so you're not super full or empty. I went up 2 cup sizes in less than a week, so getting a bra fitted when I left the hospital 1-2 days postpartum would have been a waste.
As long as the underwire bra fits well (i.e. not too small and has the wire laying on your breast - the wire should be completely around your breast and laying on your ribs to avoid plugging ducts) you should be fine. I've been wearing underwires daily since leaving the hospital 30 hours after DD was born.
I brought nursing bras to the hospital, but the ones that look like sports bras, not like 'real bras' (I'm blanking on what they're called...). Once my milk came in my boobs definitely got bigger, so I bought a couple more bras after.
I also avoided all underwire because I was scared of it...but this time around, I'm sticking with underwire. I hated the way my boobs looked for an entire year, and I don't want to do that anymore.
I bought some of the bravado basics tanks during PG and bought one of their bras from Target to the hospital. I really like sleeping the tanks and the bra worked well in the hospital too.

I brought Target nursing tanks to the hospital and continued to wear them until around 2 weeks pp when I got fitted for bras. My favorite, by far, was the Bravado Body Silk bra. Not an underwire, but I swear my boobs looked as good in it as they do in my regular underwire ones. I know lots of other ladies here recommend it as well.

This is what I wore too. Like sports bras married a nursing tank. I got mine on clearance at target and still wear then in the evening/at night!

I also wore the bravado original until my boobs settled down. One of the local hospitals has a nursing store in house so I went there and they told me what I should get and when to come back for long term bras. I have itty bitty boobs so I didn't worry about underwires.

Yes your boobs will get bigger when your milk comes in, they will settle down within a few weeks. The Bravado tanks should give you enough wiggle room. Don't waste your time & money on Target G&O tanks, you're a bigger size than me, trust me they.will.not.fit.

I agree. Skip the Target ones completely with a cup size that big.
I brought a bravado with me and a Lamaze sleep bra (it's kind of like a v necked sports bra). For some reason I never bought nursing tanks and honestly it's one of my biggest "regrets". If you're due in warm weather I think a few would be worth the investment.
I was super engorged but only for a month or so. So I didn't buy special bras based on that size.
I brought a nursing sleep bra. They usually run in S/M/L sizing, so you don't need to know your exact bra size (which won't stabilize for a couple of weeks after birth any way).
